Nicole is strengthening into a category 1 hurricane and has sustained winds of 120 km / h (75 mph), according to the latest update from the National Hurricane Center.

"Recent observations from a NOAA Hurricane Hunter aircraft indicate that Nicole has become a hurricane," the center said.

The hurricane is currently 25 miles (40 kilometers) east-northeast of Freeport, Bahamas and 105 miles (168 kilometers) east of West Palm Beach, Florida.

Nicole continues to track west at 12 mph (19 km/h) toward the east coast of Florida and is expected to make landfall after midnight.

Hurricane Nicole will continue on its way to Florida, according to forecasts.

Nearly four million people along Florida's east coast are under hurricane warnings as torrential rains and damaging winds are expected in the region.

"Nicole is expected to weaken as it moves across Florida and the southeastern United States Thursday through Friday," the National Hurricane Center said Wednesday morning.

By early Wednesday morning, Florida's east coast was already experiencing tropical storm conditions.

Up to 8 inches of rain, storm surge that could rise to 5 feet along the coast and strong winds are expected Wednesday night and Thursday.

The grim forecast has prompted evacuation orders for some Florida counties still reeling from the devastation of Hurricane Ian, which left at least 120 people dead in Florida and ripped through communities.

Public schools in Miami-Dade and Palm Beach counties were closed through at least Wednesday, and Orlando International Airport will suspend operations beginning Wednesday afternoon.

The hurricane warning includes West Palm Beach, Port St Lucie, Melbourne, the Space Coast and Daytona Beach.

Nicole's journey

It's rare for a hurricane to hit the US so late in the Atlantic hurricane season, which runs from June 1 through November.

Nicole would be the first hurricane to make landfall in the US in November in nearly 40 years.

As of early Wednesday, Nicole was about 430 kilometers east of West Palm Beach, Florida, with sustained winds of 112 kilometers per hour, just 6 kilometers per hour from becoming a Category 1 hurricane, the hurricane center said. hurricanes

The Florida panhandle could also see heavy rain on Wednesday and Thursday.

“Nicole will approach the northwestern Bahamas overnight, move near or over those islands on Wednesday, and approach the east coast of Florida within the hurricane warning area” on Wednesday night or early Thursday, explained the hurricane center.

"The center of Nicole is expected to move through central and northern Florida into southern Georgia on Thursday and later that same day."
