Autumn brings with it the fall and many leaves falling from the trees on our lawn or the floor in the yard.

Almost all of us rush to remove these leaves so they don't become a nuisance, but experts recommend not getting rid of these falling leaves at this time of the year.

The reason: they contain many vitamins that are essential for the soil.

They have nutrients such as nitrogen, carbon, phosphorus and potassium and are actually great and natural fertilizers for your soil and also for the small creatures that live in the garden.

"These nutrients return to your soil," explained Prof. Susan Burton, landscape and gardening expert, "the organic matter they contain ultimately improves the health of your soil."

By leaving the leaves on the grass or soil, you will also be doing a big favor to the animals spiders, snails and worms that will benefit from a habitat that includes moist leaves.

These are also a nutritious meal for birds and bats and may also benefit animals such as turtles and squirrels.

It's already autumn now.

The natural fertilizer these leaves create will also save you the need for chemicals and pesticides.

Want another advantage in leaving the leaves on the grass?

Well, every year 8 million tons of leaves are bagged and eventually thrown into the landfill.

If you want to collect them anyway, pile them around the base of the trees and bushes.

"The leaves in the forest provide between 50 and 80 percent of the minerals that the trees receive. No one goes into the forest to clean the leaves. They also protect the level of moisture that reaches the trees and regulate the temperature of the soil, which is like gold for the trees," explained Melissa Hopkins.
