According to US General Mark Milley, 200,000 soldiers were killed or wounded in the war in Ukraine.

He is now hoping for negotiations.

Kyiv - What US General Mark Milley just announced in a speech in New York was probably not known to many in this drastic way.

The US Army Chief of Staff said around 200,000 soldiers were killed or injured in the war in Ukraine.

In addition, around 40,000 civilians died in the conflict.

The estimates are the highest official figures so far.

"We are dealing with well over 100,000 Russian soldiers killed or wounded," said senior military adviser to US President Joe Biden.

"The same probably applies to the Ukrainian side." He also spoke of 40,000 civilians killed.

However, Milley also emphasized that there are now first signs that Kyiv is ready to resume talks with Moscow.

However, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy called for the resignation of his counterpart Vladimir Putin.

Milley added in his speech that Russia and Ukraine must come to a "mutual realization" that an end to the war "may not be achievable by military means and therefore other means must be sought".

The scale of the casualties could convince both Moscow and Kyiv of the need to negotiate in the winter months, when the weather could make fighting difficult.

So far, both sides have not made the exact number of victims public.

The Kremlin's last official statement in September said 5,937 soldiers had been killed since the start of the Ukraine war;

Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu dismissed reports of a significantly higher death toll.

Ukraine has also been reluctant to state the number of casualties. Last August, the commander-in-chief of the armed forces, Valery Saluschnyj, was quoted in the Ukrainian media as saying that 9,000 Ukrainian soldiers had been killed so far.

"There was an enormous amount of human suffering," General Milley said.

He also pointed to the estimated 15 to 30 million refugees who have arisen because of the conflict in Ukraine.

The UN has so far registered 7.8 million people fleeing Ukraine in Europe, but this figure does not include those who have been displaced from their homes within the country.
