Update from November 10, 7:11 a.m .:

There is still no final result of the midterms, but a trend is already clear.

The hoped-for triumphant success of the Republicans did not materialize.

The Democrats performed better than many pollsters had expected.

US President Joe Biden sees himself confirmed by this.

He intends to decide early next year whether he will run for the White House again in two years' time.

"In my opinion, we will make a judgment early next year," said the 79-year-old.

Joe Biden: Midterms "good day for democracy"

Update from November 9th, 10:50 p.m .:

US President Joe Biden has described the midterms as “good day for democracy” and “good day for America”.

At the same time, he reaffirmed his willingness to work with the opposition Republicans, who are likely to have a majority in the House of Representatives in the future.

"I am ready to work with my Republican colleagues," said the 79-year-old. "America's future is too bright to be caught up in endless political warfare."

Update from November 9, 9:45 p.m .:

According to Donald Trump, the midterms results are “a bit disappointing in a way”, but personally the ex-president sees the elections as a success.

As the Republican wrote on the Truth Social platform he co-founded, the majority of the candidates he supported would have won.

"Who has ever done better?" he asked.

In fact, prominent protégés of Trump lost or were behind in tight races.

Candidates he supported were particularly successful in places where Republican approval is already high.

Trump angry after midterms

Update from November 9th, 6:20 p.m.:

In the White House, the first results of the midterms are received with goodwill.

CNN

reports

that US President Joe Biden's camp does not want to draw any hasty conclusions from the elections.

But the numbers are seen as early confirmation that the multifaceted approaches to solving the problem are going down better than expected.

"We have bucked historical trends," a senior Biden adviser told the broadcaster, "That's pretty extraordinary when you think about it." Another Biden adviser saw a "historic turnaround."

Update from November 9, 5:05 p.m .:

After the midterms, Donald Trump’s mood seems to be in the basement.

CNN

, referring to one of the Republican's advisors , reports

that he was "angry" and would "yell at everyone".

The unspecified source had been in contact with Trump's closest circle.

The report speaks of a "particularly bad night" for Trump.

Midterms already a partial success for Democrats: There is no clear Republican victory for the time being

Update from November 9th, 4:35 p.m

.: Surprise in the midterms: Biden and his Democrats have done much better than expected.

A clear victory for the Republicans, as predicted in the polls, did not materialize.

Even the day after the vote, it is still unclear who will achieve the majorities in the two chambers of Congress.

It was initially unclear how long it would take to count the results.

The Democrats were able to achieve important successes and, for example in Pennsylvania, took one of the 100 Senate seats from the Republicans.

The progressive John Fetterman prevailed there against the TV doctor Mehmet Oz, who was supported by Trump.

It could take a while until the result in the remaining four states is clarified.

In Nevada and Arizona, the counting of postal votes could possibly take days.

And should the Senate majority ultimately decide in Georgia - as in 2020 - there would be a longer impasse.

In Georgia there will be a runoff on December 6 if no candidate gets more than 50 percent in the first attempt.

Midterms in the US: Putin spokesman Peskov downplays result

Update from November 9, 1:45 p.m

.: Are the results of the midterms decisive for the Russian-American relationship?

According to Moscow, probably not: "Relationships are and will remain bad," said Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov, according to the Interfax agency.

"These elections are important, but I will not be wrong in saying that the importance of these elections for the short- and medium-term future perspective of our bilateral relationship should not be seriously exaggerated."

Update from November 9, 12:35 p.m .:

Donald Trump is known to be (still) blocked on the Twitter communication platform – which could soon change with Elon Musk’s takeover of Twitter.

The ex-president cannot comment on the results of the midterm elections so far, which seem to be going worse than expected for the Republicans.

However, this was done by his son, Donald Trump Junior (45).

As a first reaction after the announcement of the first election results, he published a single word on Twitter: "Bloodbath!", Translated "bloodbath".

Only he himself knows exactly what Donald Trump Jr. means by that. However, the exclamation does not necessarily - as it seems at first glance - have to be understood as a call for violence.

It can also be interpreted as an expectation that the expected “red wave” of Republicans (whose party color is traditionally “red”) will still spill over the country.

Republican Kari Lake fuels rumors of voter fraud at Midterms

Update from November 9, 10:56 a.m .:

Republican Kari Lake, who is applying for the governorship in Arizona, apparently spreads rumors of election fraud in the Midterms.

Only a little over half of the votes given in Arizona have been counted.

The ardent Trump supporter can't hope for the brilliant victory she seems to have hoped for in the midterms, instead her competitor Katie Hobbs from the Democrats is ahead.

Now, according to CNN, she said in a speech to supporters: "We had November 3, 2020, which was called Incompetence 101".

Lake added that "incompetence" was also involved in the current midterm elections.

“We need honest elections and we will bring them to you, Arizona, I assure you.

The system we have now doesn't work.” The former TV host for the conservative US broadcaster Fox News has in the past regularly spread the false claim that Trump's victory in the 2020 presidential election was “stolen” through voter fraud.

Kari Lake also attacked a journalist from the broadcaster CBS News, as reported by the US political website

The Hill

- and announced a large-scale fight against the media.

Lake also shared a related clip on her Twitter account.

Asked about her post-election intentions, the 53-year-old belligerently said: "I will be your worst nightmare for eight years and we will also reform the media.

We're going to make you journalists again, so get ready.

It's going to be a fun eight years.

I can't wait to work with you."

Midterm elections in the USA: voters in three states plead for abortion rights

Update from November 9, 10:26 a.m .:

The US midterm elections not only decide on the seats in the US Congress, but also on changes in the law in several states.

The focus is on the right to abortion.

In California, Michigan and Vermont, citizens have spoken out at the Midterms to protect abortion rights, according to CNN.

The results of the referendums in Kentucky and Montana are still pending.

The decision by the US Supreme Court last June to overturn the country's abortion law caused a political tremor in the United States, and demonstrations erupted across the country.

Will Republicans Make Majority in the House of Representatives?

result could take a long time

Update from November 9th, 9.45 a.m .:

According to the

New York Times

, it could be days or even longer in the House of Representatives elections before it is clear whether the Republicans will in future have a majority of the MPs and thus the remaining term of US President Biden noticeably can make it difficult.

Republicans are currently 22 seats short of a majority, many in western US states where counting tends to take a particularly long time.

Update from November 9, 9:20 a.m .:

It is becoming apparent that the midterm elections in the middle of Joe Biden’s term in office will end more lightly for him than predicted.

After the big smack that the 79-year-old had to fear, it doesn't look like it's going to happen at the moment.

On election night, Biden tweeted a photo of himself on the phone with a sweater, cap and a wry smile on his face.

It shows him congratulating some party colleagues on their election victory.

Update from November 9, 9:00 a.m.:

Interim results of the midterm elections in the USA: The congressional elections are a closer race than observers expected.

In the race for the future Senate majority, a few duels in states such as Arizona, Georgia, Nevada and Wisconsin will be decisive.

It could be days - and even a month in Georgia because of a runoff rule - before the winners are determined.

Voters punish Trump and Biden in poll

Update from November 9, 7.40 a.m .:

The election research institute “Edison Research” asked voters in the US midterms for their opinion on US President Joe Biden and ex-President Trump, who probably wants to run for president again in 2024 .

According to this, more than two-thirds of those surveyed do not want Biden to run for US President again in 2024.

90 percent of Republican voters disagree.

But less than 60 percent of Democratic supporters would support Biden's re-election, according to the results of the representative poll commissioned by CNN and several other US news channels.

As for Trump, according to the poll, two-thirds of independent voters have a bad opinion of the ex-president, and as much as 90 percent of Democratic Party supporters.

More than three-quarters of Republican voters find Trump's work and behavior positive.

Update from November 9th, 7.15 a.m .:

A final result of the midterms - especially for the congressional elections - can still be a long time coming.

Some initial findings and theses can already be formulated: The "red wave" in the midterms is missing, Trump's candidates are weakening and there are new allegations of manipulation - the most important of the midterm night can be found here at a glance.

Republican Senator: "Definitely not a Republican Wave" at Midterms 2022

Update from November 9th, 6.40 a.m .:

The Republicans had hoped for a landslide election victory in the Midterms.

After the polling stations in the USA were closed, the race for the Senate and House of Representatives is getting closer than expected.

Republican Senator Lindsey Graham conceded on NBC that there was “definitely no Republican wave”.

His Senate colleague Ted Cruz said he was still counting on future majorities for his party in both chambers of Congress.

The wave is "not as big as I had hoped".

For example, US President Biden's Democrats defended two hard-fought seats in the state of Virginia in the House of Representatives: the two incumbents, Abigail Spanberger and Jennifer Wexton, were re-elected.

Observers saw this as a key indicator of Republican performance.

Head-to-head race for majority in Senate - Currently stalemate at Midterms

Update from November 9, 6:12 a.m .:

The polling stations for the US midterms have now closed throughout the US except for Alaska, and the counting of votes is ongoing.

According to CNN, the race for the Senate is still completely open.

It is currently exactly a tie: According to the preliminary results, the Republicans hold 46 seats, as do the Democrats.

With eight seats, the result is still open.

In some states - such as Georgia and Pennsylvania - the neck-and-neck race of the candidates is so close, according to CNN, that it is not yet possible to make a forecast.

Midterms: Again allegations of election manipulation by Trump's Republicans

Update from November 9th, 5.40 a.m .:

In the US state of Arizona there were problems with electronic voting machines in some of the polling stations.

According to the authorities, Maricopa County with the cities of Phoenix and Tempe was affected.

The vote counting machines there could not read the ballots printed out on site because the markings were not clear enough for them.

The voters could put them in the ballot box.

This could lead to disputes over the results of the parliamentary elections.

The Republicans have already tried, citing the problems, to obtain an injunction in court to obtain longer opening hours for the polling stations, but a judge rejected the request.

Donald Trump heated up the mood early on.

Republicans could also use the technical problems to claim that the Democrats want to commit voter fraud.

Republican gubernatorial candidate in Arizona, Kari Lake, has already made corresponding suggestions on Twitter.

She told a US news outlet in a video she shared that, significantly, she had had no trouble voting in a "left" neighborhood.

"Think, do you think this is normal?" the former news anchor asked several times.

Kari Lake has endorsed and endorsed Trump's claims of the stolen 2020 election.

According to US media reports from Arizona, the authorities announced that 90 to 95 percent of the votes should be counted by Friday.

Maricopa County was the scene of bitter court battles following the 2020 presidential election with allegations of irregularities, which were ultimately dismissed.

Midterms 2022: US President Biden congratulates Democratic winners

Update from November 9, 4:20 a.m .:

While the votes in the US midterm elections are being counted, US President Joe Biden, according to information from the White House, calls the democratic winners of the election and congratulates them.

According to a press release from the White House, Biden has called the following Democrats:

  • Governor-Elect of Massachusetts Maura Healey

  • Rhode Island Governor Dan McKee

  • Senator-elect Peter Welch

  • Representative Lisa Blunt Rochester

  • Colorado Governor Jares Polis

  • Representative Abigail Spanberger

  • Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer

No landslide victory in the midterms: neither Democrats nor Republicans are clearly ahead

Update from November 9, 4:05 a.m .:

After several hours of counting in many states, there has not yet been a clear trend in the US midterm elections.

Neither the Republicans, who were previously slightly favored in polls, nor the Democrats, who control both the Senate and the House of Representatives, have so far been able to clearly win the "Midterms".

It didn't look like a landslide victory for either party.

However, Republicans need only gain one seat in the Senate and five in the House of Representatives to reverse the majority balance.

So far, there have been signs of victory in at least three additional constituencies in the House of Representatives, and observers in the US media initially estimated gains of between 10 and 20 seats.

However, at this point in time, many counting results were still missing, which made forecasts difficult.

Republicans did particularly well in Florida.

There, the incumbent governor, Ron DeSantis, was clearly re-elected.

He is considered by many to be a possible competitor to Donald Trump in the race for the 2024 presidential candidacy.

Republican McCarthy optimistic about majority in House of Representatives

Update from November 9, 3:10 a.m .:

The Republican minority leader in the US House of Representatives, Kevin McCarthy, is optimistic in the midterm elections with a view to his party taking over the majority in the house, as reported by the CNN broadcaster.

Accordingly, his advisors emphasize that the first reports would point to a Republican majority in the House of Representatives.

According to McCarthy, the race is going as expected by the Republicans.

Polling stations in the USA are closed – now the results of the midterms are coming

Update from November 9, 1:05 a.m .:

The first results are now available in the midterm elections in the USA.

Update from November 9, 12:45 a.m .:

The “exit polls” in the midterms give US President Joe Biden a bad report, but according to CNN, his predecessor Donald Trump is even worse.

Around 60 percent reject Trump accordingly.

His approval is only around 37 percent.

Biden's candidacy apparently independent of the results of the midterm elections

Update from November 9, 12:20 a.m.:

Will the results of the midterm elections have an impact on Joe Biden's re-election in the 2024 presidential election?

A consultant told CNN that this was not the case.

After all, Biden's two Democratic predecessors did poorly in the midterms, but were nevertheless reelected.

Biden has not yet made a final decision on whether to run again.

First polling stations in Indiana and Kentucky are closing

Update from November 9th, 12:05 a.m .:

The first polling stations closed in the midterm elections in the USA.

In parts of the US states of Indiana and Kentucky, voting ended on Tuesday evening (6:00 p.m. local time/0:00 a.m. CET).

Since the United States stretches across several time zones, the election is dragging on for a very long time: in large parts of Alaska and Hawaii, the polling stations are open until 6:00 a.m. CET.

The first meaningful results are not expected until early Wednesday morning, Central European Time.

Midterm voters unhappy with Biden — more than half reject him

Update from November 8th, 11:45 p.m.:

While the midterm elections in the USA are running, the so-called “Exit Polls” by the opinion research institute Edison Research for CNN and other US broadcasters show an alarming situation for the Democratic Party and President Joe Biden.

Accordingly, voters in the midterms are largely dissatisfied with the state of the nation and Biden.

More than 70 percent are dissatisfied with the situation in the USA, with around a third of those surveyed saying that they are not only dissatisfied but also angry.

54 percent of respondents said they would reject Biden as president.

According to the poll, the approval of the US President is 45 percent.

Biden's policy is a shame for the United States, said 46 percent of those surveyed.

36 percent see the US President's policies as "helpful".

According to the broadcaster CNN, 12,458 voters were interviewed at 250 polling stations for the survey.

Mail voters were also questioned.

Arrest in Wisconsin — Man threatens voter with knife

Update from November 8, 11:20 p.m .:

In the US state of Wisconsin, a 38-year-old man was arrested by the police after he threatened voters in a suburb of Milwaukee with a knife.

A polling station had to be closed for a short time.

Problems with voting machines in Arizona are apparently being solved

Update from November 8, 10:55 p.m .:

According to the election officials in the Maricopa County district of the US state of Arizona, the problems with the voting machines are gradually being solved.

The US broadcaster CNN quoted the responsible electoral authority as saying that changing the printer settings was successful at 17 of 60 polling stations.

Now the settings are also being changed in the other polling stations.

Midterms: Trump heats up sentiment and appeals to Arizona people

Update from November 8, 10:40 p.m .:

Ex-US President Donald Trump commented on his own social media platform “Truth Social” about the failure of voting machines in the state of Arizona.

Trump interpreted this as an attempt to "steal" the election and appealed to the population: "Don't leave the line until you have cast your vote.

They try to steal the election with bad machines and delays.

Don't let that happen!”

Dozens of voting machines failed in a district in the US state of Arizona during the US congressional elections on Tuesday.

There are "about 20 percent" of the 223 polling stations in Maricopa County due to technical problems with the machines, said the chairman of the local Elections Commission, Bill Gates.

However, the failed machines would have no influence on the correctness of the choice.

According to the authority, it set up “secure boxes” in which the ballot papers would be kept until they were counted.

Trump is already grumbling about alleged irregularities in midterms

Update from November 8, 8:55 p.m .:

On the day of the midterm elections in the United States, ex-US President Donald Trump complained about alleged irregularities in voting – and called for protests.

In Detroit, voters at the polling station were told they had already voted: "This is happening in large numbers, also elsewhere.

Protest, protest, protest!” Trump wrote on Tuesday on the social media platform Truth Social, which he co-founded – without providing any evidence for his claims.

Also, electronic voting machines would allegedly not work in conservative districts of the embattled state of Arizona.

November in Aussicht stellte.

Ebenso stehen in zahlreichen Bundesstaaten Gouverneurswahlen an.

In the aggressively conducted election campaign, a violent attack on the 82-year-old husband of top Democratic politician Nancy Pelosi increased fears of politically motivated violence.

The perpetrator was actually targeting the powerful Speaker of the House of Representatives, but he did not meet her.

Biden and the White House have expressed concern about the situation.

Threats against politicians and their family members have been increasing in the United States for some time.

Forecasts for the midterms show where there will be particularly close races.
