Last night the chief rabbi called for the enacting of a clause of overcoming as well as amending the law on who is a Jew • Minister of Finance: "The statements of the chief rabbi are outrageous, he should be free from politics and extortion" • In the past the chief rabbi called the expatriates of the Commonwealth of Nations "there are many, many gentiles here, some of them communists"

Finance Minister Lieberman responds to the words of Chief Rabbi Yitzhak Yosef, who called for the enacting of the overcoming clause, and said: "The Chief Rabbi functions as a chief politician. The repeated calls from the Chief Rabbi, Yitzhak Yosef, regarding political decisions, are nothing less than outrageous. Yosef, who last night called for the enacting of the overcoming clause, which is a controversial law, fully sinning in its role which should be free from politics and foreign extortion.

"This is not the first attempt to intervene by the chief rabbi, who just a few days ago also intervened in the coalition negotiations and called for a three- and four-fold increase in the pension for the orphans, and therefore I call on the prime minister to suspend him immediately and after the hearing process to fire him, and this even before the formation of a new government." .

In his class this week last night (Saturday), the head coach called for the passage of a clause that overrides the High Court of Justice and also called for amending the law on who is a Jew. For years the ultra-Orthodox have been trying to change the law so that the grandson of a Jewish grandfather would not be defined as a Jew and would be denied the right to immigrate to the country by virtue of the Law of Return.

Yitzhak Yosef's outrageous statements are not new. In the past, the chief rabbi spoke out against immigrants from the Commonwealth of Nations and said "Hundreds of thousands or tens of thousands of gentiles came to Israel because of the 'Who is a Jew' law... There are many, many gentiles here, some of them communists, hostile religion, haters of religion. They are not Jews at all, gentiles. Then they vote for parties that incite against the ultra-orthodox and against religion."

He also said: "Bring them here to Israel to be a weight against the ultra-Orthodox... so that if there are elections there won't be much for the ultra-Orthodox. That's why they were brought here to Israel, complete gentiles, truly complete gentiles. To our great regret, we see the fruit of the incitement they are doing."

He later claimed that some of the immigrant families even have those who "go to church every Sunday, go to the monastery."

This statement led to condemnations from across the political spectrum, including Netanyahu: "An outrageous statement that is out of place. Immigration from the countries of the former Commonwealth of Nations is a huge blessing for the State of Israel and the Jewish people. The government led by me will continue to work for the immigration and absorption in Israel of our brothers and sisters from the former Soviet Union."
