Makhlouf: Unilateral coercive measures have prevented the supply of requirements for Syrian plans for climate adaptation

The Minister of Local Administration and Environment, Eng. Hussein Makhlouf, affirmed the Syrian Arab Republic's commitment to international environmental agreements, especially the Climate Change Agreement and the Paris Agreement.

During his participation in the ministerial round table at the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change held in Sharm El-Sheikh on opportunities to increase ambition to advance the implementation of nationally determined contributions, to mitigate the effects of climate change, Makhlouf explained that Syria has developed a plan to adapt to climate change that addresses the sectors of agriculture and water resources. However, the unilateral coercive economic measures imposed by the West have prevented the supply of supplies and equipment for these plans, and placed obstacles in the way of financing and bank transfers, indicating at the same time Syria’s need to benefit fairly from international financing funds, especially the Green Climate Fund and the Green Climate Fund. Adaptation, so that we can transfer clean technology and build capacity.

Eng. Makhlouf referred to the unprecedented climatic phenomena that Syria and neighboring countries are witnessing, such as rain, drought, desertification, forest fires and sand storms, which have increased the negative effects of the practices of terrorist organizations and their supporters from the US and Turkish occupations.

The Fifth Ministerial Meeting on Long-Term Climate Finance, which is being held in Sharm El-Sheikh, aims to make progress towards achieving the financing required to implement climate change adaptation plans for developing countries.

Today, high-level ministerial meetings within the Conference of Parties were launched in Sharm El-Sheikh, with the participation of the Syrian delegation headed by Eng. Makhlouf.

Minister Makhlouf will participate in the first annual ministerial meeting on a round table entitled “Ambition before 2030”, and the fifth ministerial meeting to hold a dialogue on “long-term climate finance”, which aims to achieve the financing required to implement climate change adaptation plans for developing countries, in addition to his presence Important meetings on the sidelines of the conference and holding some meetings with its counterparts to discuss issues of common interest.

It is noteworthy that the technical delegation of the Syrian Arab Republic has participated since the beginning of the climate conference, which opened on the 6th of this month, in the events and deliberations within the twenty-seventh conference of the Conference of the Parties to the Framework Convention, the fourth session of the meeting of the Conference of the Parties to Paris, and the seventeenth session of the Kyoto Meeting of the Parties. Conference until the eighteenth of this month.
