"We want to send a strong signal," the operators explain.

Like other Munich bars, they have decided not to broadcast the World Cup matches in Qatar.

Munich – The NFL event in Munich was advertised aggressively, the available public viewing places were quickly taken.

However, when Qatar and Ecuador ring in the much-controversial World Cup on November 20th, the screens remain black.

The Tegernseer Tal Bräuhaus has decided to boycott.

"THE public viewing stronghold" in Munich wants to boycott games at the Qatar World Cup

And that despite the fact that they describe themselves as "THE public viewing stronghold in the heart of downtown Munich".

At least that's how the operators put it in a Facebook post that sheds light on the background to the boycott.

“Our decision is clear: this year's World Cup in Qatar is very closely linked to the suffering of migrant workers.

We want to send a strong signal that human rights are more important to us than any form of commerce.”

For the decision announced at the beginning of November 2022, the Bräuhaus received encouragement on Facebook ("Respect", "Top"), but also critical questions.

Several guests want to know what's going on with FC Bayern's games.

Because the record champion "doesn't take Qatar that seriously," writes a football fan with reference to Munich's controversial sponsorship deal.

FC Bayern games continue to flicker across the screens in the Bräuhaus.

Munich: Football World Cup in Qatar highly controversial - restaurateurs are fighting back

The Park Café at the Old Botanical Garden and the Haidhausen pub vivo have also decided to boycott the Qatar World Cup games.

The operators have made this unmistakably clear in emotional social media posts.

The vivo justification included a dig at FC Bayern Honorary President Uli Hoeneß.

Public viewing spectacles propagated by the city for the controversial event are not planned.

The alliance “Culture instead of Qatar” is calling for a boycott of the major tournament online.

Restaurateurs are encouraged to show concerts instead of football in their establishments.

Many other businesses have already joined the call under the hashtag “KeinKatarInMeinerKneipe”.

Can you ignore criticism of Qatar at the World Cup?

We find: no.

Should we refrain from reporting because of them?

That wouldn't do the sport justice.

That's why we do both: We keep an eye on the host - and on football.
