In Dorfen, new outdoor mobile phone masts and a fiber optic network are planned in the city, as announced at the building committee meeting.

Dorfen – The town of Dorfen builds mobile phone masts and leases them to telecommunications companies – all with generous funding.

This is how dead spots in the municipal area are to be closed.

In turn, the fiber optic network for the Internet is being expanded in the city area.

Telekom is responsible for this in the southern area of Dorfen, while north of the Isen the municipality must take action itself as things stand at present.

According to joint studies by the Ledermann engineering office and the mobile phone provider, the gaps in mobile phone reception are in the north-east around Kalling and in the south-east near Parschenberg.

The building committee decided to proceed with the planning.

Depending on the height, the construction of a transmission mast costs 80,000 to 170,000 euros.

The subsidy rate is 80 percent.

Half a million euros have already been approved after an application to the Bavarian Mobile Telecommunications Promotion Center.

"I always thought that the cell phone operators were responsible for building masts," said Martin Heilmeier (LDW).

The telecommunications companies are responsible for the basic supply, replied Mayor Heinz Grundner (CSU).

"But the gray and white patches are extra coverage for our citizens," he said.

With regard to the location directly on the border to Taufkirchen, Heilmeier suggested a cost sharing.

The mayor replied that they would try to regulate this within the framework of inter-municipal cooperation.

That was the wrong order, said Michaela Meister (SPD).

It would be better to negotiate a stake first.

Heilmeier pointed out that that would be around 60,000 euros for an area with wooded areas and around 20 residents.

It's also about the safety of people who are out and about there, for example when working in the forest, Grundner said.

He knows better mobile phone coverage from safaris in Africa, said Deputy Mayor Ludwig Rudolf (CSU).

The investment is worth it "that we reach the standard of Tanzania or Kenya".

Broadband expansion is about closing the "grey spots" with a bandwidth below 100 megabits per second.

"We sometimes have worse coverage in the city center than outside," explained Grundner.

In the southern half of the city, Telekom is now planning a self-sufficient expansion, but not in the north, explained engineer Josef Ledermann.

For the part that is not supplied, the municipality can take action itself in the operator model, the expert described.

The city builds the network and then looks for an operator.

That could also be the municipal works, says Ledermann.

The intended federal funding program was canceled unannounced within a weekend in October.

Now the Bavarian gigabit program remains as an alternative.

Dorfen can apply for 90 percent funding, capped at six million euros.

According to Ledermann, 5,000 euros are subsidized per address.

About 2000 houses are to be connected.

"It's what other telecommunications providers say that matters," explained engineer Ledermann.

It could well be that a company also wants to expand the fiber optic network in the northern area.

Why Telekom is currently active in the south and not in the rest is not transparent to him.
