The SAR government issued a statement in the early hours of today (16th), strongly refuting the "2022 Report" issued by the US-China Economic and Security Review Commission, pointing out that its content once again maliciously slanders and politically attacks the Hong Kong SAR.
The government pointed out that the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region is an inseparable part of the People's Republic of China, and once again urged the United States to abide by international law and the basic norms of international relations, and immediately stop its wrongful interference in the affairs of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region.
The government stated that it must solemnly point out the inconsistencies and smears made in the so-called "report" aimed at improving the electoral system of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region.
The well-established electoral system of the SAR provides legal protection for the full implementation of the principle of "patriots governing Hong Kong". It is a universal political principle to ensure that power is in the hands of patriots. The people of no country or region will allow the power to fall into unpatriotic or even in the hands of those who betrayed their own country.
Anyone with any background, as long as they meet the requirements and specific standards of patriots, can participate in elections in accordance with the law, enter the governance structure of the SAR, and serve the people of Hong Kong.
According to the well-established electoral system, the government has successfully held the seventh-term Legislative Council election and the sixth-term chief executive election on December 19, 2021 and May 8, 2022 respectively. The provisions are conducted openly, fairly and honestly, which fully demonstrates the broad representation, political inclusiveness, balanced participation and fair competition of the new electoral system.
The new electoral system is absolutely in line with the principle of "one country, two systems" and the actual situation in Hong Kong. It is conducive to safeguarding the democratic rights of Hong Kong residents and the development of democracy in Hong Kong, and is more conducive to maintaining Hong Kong's long-term prosperity and stability.
