How to take care of plants in winter and which winter flowers are most beautiful to brighten up the house

Low temperatures can affect home plants, but you should not give up or think that they are dying and, in addition, there are species that still have time to flourish. Not transplanting them and reducing the frequency of irrigation are some of the essential care so that they survive the cold months.

"If the plant stops growing and changes its appearance, there is no need to be alarmed, it is normal during times of low temperatures," explains Jon Joannas, manager of Copacabana 1055 (Calle Doctor Fourquet, 30), sending a message of tranquility. a small garden dotted with pieces of art and neon lights where music always plays, located in the Madrid neighborhood of Lavapiés.

"Winter is a period of hibernation, your plants also need their time to rest and this is it," adds Joannas, who recalls some basic guidelines that must be taken into account to take care of houseplants in these cold months.

The good news is that they require less care.

The important thing, in general terms, is that “we should not transplant them, the transplants will have to wait for spring;

we will not provide them with extra nutrients (fertilizers or fertilizers);

and we will reduce the frequency of irrigation”.

The founder of Copacabana 1055 establishes a golden rule that should not be neglected in winter: "The most important thing is to make sure that your plants receive enough light."

Of course, he clarifies that this does not mean that they have to be placed in full sun.

"In winter there are fewer daylight hours, so you should check that they are located in a bright place, taking into account the specific light needs of each plant."

Some concern may arise for that outdoor plant that does not withstand the cold well, in which case it is reasonable to move it inside the home.

“If you decide to move an outdoor plant indoors, it should be in the sunniest spot in your space,” Joannas specifies.

The amount of water and the frequency of irrigation usually contain one of the most common mistakes in plant care in the cold season.

It is necessary to understand that some guidelines must be modified, since the vegetables themselves do not have the same needs.

"During this cold season, irrigation should be less frequent because the water takes longer to evaporate when the temperatures are lower, and the humidity of the environment increases," explains Joannas, who advises, however, "spray them with water daily, since the heating increases the dryness of the interiors”.

Despite the intention to protect them from the cold, it is necessary to keep the plants away from heating devices.

Central heating systems are less harmful, but those that emit a flow of hot air can be too aggressive, both due to their impact and the way in which they destroy the humidity in the environment, which is why spraying near the leaves with water is a good idea.

Not all plants flower in spring and summer, there are some that live their moment of greatest splendor and color with the drop in temperatures.

Joannas favorites for the cold season are, among others,

cyclamen

, a bulbous plant with very curious flowers that do not tolerate heat and explore the palette of reds and pinks.

Also the popularly known as queen's earrings (

fuchsia

), a type of shrub that grows, as Joannas indicates, in those luminous places where the sun does not hit directly.

It supports moving indoors and a certain drop in temperatures, it blooms during autumn and in winter you can wait for it to hibernate.

It is another bulbous plant with very resistant flowers in addition to the passage of time.

Like the chrysanthemum, whose flowers are kept for a long time even after being cut (yes, in a pot it will need a lot of space and substrate).

Camellia is a beautiful shrub that blooms in winter and, although it is a bit delicate, it prefers the shade to the sun.

The pansy or viola is a one-flowered plant that may appear delicate in appearance, but can withstand very cold temperatures.

So much so that it prefers outdoor locations and can flourish, despite the cold, throughout the winter.

Like the vegetable garden, the domestic orchard does not have to be less cheerful or colorful in winter.

Plants develop at a different pace, lower their care demands.

Against all odds, it may be the best time to enjoy them.
