Old-fashioned, disconnected and chauvinist: Eilat press conference - without internet and without women - voila! Barangay

"a shameful incident"; Eilat press conference - almost no women

This does not stand in a vacuum.

Although some of the media are actually gender egalitarian, apart from the economic press, none of the main media outlets have a single female CEO or publisher at the head

While a considerable number of senior journalists in Israel are lamenting the low political representation evident in the right-wing government that is being formed (about eight serving only), precisely in the backyard of the industry there is no less clear gender discrimination, which, while not new, seems to be getting worse every year.

From checking and voila!

Barangay reveals that the presence of women at the 15th press conference that is currently taking place in Eilat, the female presence is minimal: on average there are about eight people sitting on the panels (moderator and seven speakers).

Most of them have only one or two women.

There was no woman in three panels.

There was only one woman in the eight.

At six there were two women.

One panel had three women.

and two had four wives.

The total number of performances by male participants in the various panels is 121. The total number of female performances is 31. In other words: only a fifth, about 20% of those appearing on stage are women.

This, of course, does not exist in a vacuum.

Although some of the main media bodies are actually gender equal (at least in the numerical aspect) - except in the economic press, none of them has a single female CEO or publisher at the head.

This is also the only one, Galit Altstein in the GLC, here acting. The same is true with regard to those who control the major media outlets. The exclusion takes on a different effect since this is one of the fields that are perceived as more "feminine".

The absence of women is a long-standing phenomenon that characterizes the conference.

Over the years resentment was expressed, but the conference did not change its character.

Among the participants there are those who wonder about the reasons.

During one of the panels this morning, the question from the audience was brought up to the stage.

In this context it is important to note: many present at the conference come on behalf of the state.

The Israel Police, the IDF spokesperson, the Ministry of Education, regulators, etc. The cost of participation is 1,500 NIS for entry only or 2,800 to 3,600 NIS including taxes. Meaning: the state is actually participating in the financing of an event that discriminates against women.

"It's shameful that such a significant event takes place in this way"

The executive director of the women's lobby, attorney Einat Fischer-Lalou, responded to the low representation of women at the 15th press conference and told Walla!

Branch: "It was brought to our attention that less than 30% of the participants in the press conference in Eilat are women. It is shameful that such an important and significant event takes place in this way. This is an event in which representatives from government ministries and institutions and companies funded by the state take part. Women make up 51% of the population And precisely at the press conference, which is the core of democracy and shapes the public discourse in Israel, it was expected that adequate and equal representation would be given to women."

She further added: "We call on the government of Israel to create a legal mechanism that requires the government ministries to make sure that in every conference attended by official representatives on their behalf there is adequate representation for women as well. Only in this way will we be able to promote true equality in the State of Israel."

Conference program

A minor detail

This is not the end of the criticism of the conference, which this year seems less relevant than ever.

It turns out that not one senior representative of the major internet sites (Walla! and Ynet) participates in the conference, neither as panel moderators nor as speakers.

What is even more interesting is that, according to all the simulations, the majority of the population (over 70%) consumes the news through social networks and through websites.

It is difficult to understand how an intelligent discussion can be held on the subject without journalistic representation for the platform.
