Polish media showed an image of a deep-impact and overturned agricultural vehicle at the site, near the city of Przewodow.

It is not clear where the shells came from.

However, the missiles or rockets fell at about the same time as a Russian missile strike in western Ukraine.

A government spokesman said Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki had convened the Council of Ministers Committee for National Security and Defense Affairs.

He added that the details will be released after the meeting.

A Polish official told CNN that nothing had been confirmed yet and that the investigation into the incident was continuing.

However, Latvian Defense Minister Artis Pabriks tweeted:

"My condolences to our Polish brothers. The criminal Russian regime fired missiles that not only targeted Ukrainian civilians, but also landed on NATO territory in Poland. Latvia fully supports Polish friends and condemns this crime."

There has been no confirmation yet from the Polish authorities that the Russian missiles have landed on Polish territory.

US Defense Department Press Secretary General Pat Ryder said the United States is "aware of press reports alleging that two Russian missiles have struck a location inside Poland near the border with Ukraine", but currently has no information to corroborate those reports.

The Defense Department repeated that the United States "will defend every inch of NATO territory" while it awaits further information.

“When it comes to force protection, we always take the safety of our troops very seriously no matter where they are serving,” Ryder said.

Another NATO member, Estonia, called reports that missiles had landed inside Poland "very worrying."

The Estonian Foreign Ministry commented on Twitter: “The latest news from Poland is the most worrying.

We are consulting closely with Poland and other allies."

“Estonia is ready to defend every inch of NATO territory.

"We stand in full solidarity with our close ally Poland."
