The defeat of Kari Lake, announced Monday evening, is also one of the most symbolic.
Republican candidate for governor of Arizona, the former television presenter had been one of the most fervent and most media-savvy Trumpists of the electoral campaign.
Lake had taken up all the accusations of fraud thrown by Trump over the 2020 ballot. She was presented as a figure of the new Republican Party.
Her name was even mentioned as a possible candidate for the vice-presidency alongside Donald Trump in 2024.
But, like most Trump-backed candidates, sometimes against more mainstream Republicans, Lake was ultimately beaten by her Democratic opponent.
His defeat comes on top of the Republicans' failure to regain control of the Senate, and their disappointing result in the House of Representatives.
Party officials have since openly questioned the influence of the former president.
