The city center of Freising is getting greener: 17 new trees will be planted in Obere Hauptstraße in November.

Freising

– The greening of the city center is now gaining momentum: As announced by Freising City Hall spokeswoman Christl Steinhart, 17 new trees are expected to be planted in Obere Hauptstraße from Tuesday, November 22nd.

Criticism had repeatedly flared up about the lack of plants in the center.

New plantings are adapted to climate change

Five 'Tiefurt' bird cherry trees will be planted along the Moosach on Oberen Hauptstraße, six sweetgum trees in the Am Wörth area, one gray alder and two red maples at the junction with the dead-end street, and three service pear trees in the area of the Karlwirt junction.

"The new plantings are adapted to climate change through the selection of species and are intended to bring about microclimatic improvements," explains Steinhart.

In the current construction phase, there were already city trees before the conversion.

However, external assessments had shown that most of the trees were in a very poor condition and therefore had to be replaced as part of the redesign.

When planting new trees, special attention is paid to sufficient substrate volume in order to give the trees the best possible and permanent growth conditions.

Mobile planting elements complement permanent trees

"For this purpose, generous tree quarters were created at the new tree locations," emphasizes the town hall spokeswoman.

The area, which is largely free of utility lines and was filled with a special substrate that allows roots to penetrate, is five by five meters in size and around 1.3 meters deep.

(By the way: everything from the region is now also available in our regular Freising newsletter.)

Various new tree locations have already been created on Untere Hauptstrasse, Weizengasse, General-von-Nagel-Strasse and Untere Domberggasse, and ginkgo trees, columnar oaks, flowering ash trees, a maple, a magnolia and a locust were planted, among other things.

"Where it is not possible to plant trees in a permanent, underground quarter due to the existing division lines or organizational reasons, the city center is greened with mobile planting elements," explains Steinhart.

Plants bind dust, pollutants and carbon dioxide

The climate adaptation concept KLAPS 50 of the city of Freising attaches great importance to the preservation and promotion of inner-city greenery in order to further improve the climatic-ecological situation in Freising in the long term: Inner-city vegetation not only strengthens the identity of places, but also binds dust, pollutants and carbon dioxide.

Trees in particular provide shade on hot days, cool urban spaces and consequently provide important ecosystem services.

But also shrubs, perennials, plant arrangements in tubs and pots as well as green facades and roofs help to enliven the city and offer various creatures food and hiding places.
