A lot will be new on the Weilheimer Stadtbach when the renovation of the bank structures between Gögerlweg and Trachtenheim is complete.

The building committee agrees that the avenue trees that have been felled will be replanted, although one authority has recommended otherwise.

– The recent felling of trees in the upper town has upset many citizens (we reported).

But according to the city, they were unavoidable: Seven trees had to be felled because they were no longer stable, according to the city building office, "mainly because of ash dieback or too narrow living space with road salt pollution next to the thoroughfare".

Around half a dozen other trees fell victim to the necessary heightening of the bridge at the pedestrian traffic light at the junction with Römerstraße.

This, too, would have had to be felled "in the next few years anyway for reasons of stability," emphasizes the city building authority.

The specialist authority recommends avoiding new trees on the Stadtbach

There was no question for the town hall that there should be replanting.

But an inquiry to the water management office about the procedure and the planting material revealed: The specialist authority recommends not planting new trees - "for reasons of safety of the embankment or the dam", as the head of construction management Manfred Stork reported on Tuesday to the city council's building committee.

Stork, however, specifically asked for a "decision for trees", "regardless of whether the dam could be damaged".

There have been no problems in this regard in the past.

With the members of the committee, he ran into open doors.

The committee unanimously decided to replant.

After the construction work is completed (probably in spring 2023), new trees will be planted - "where they make sense, where we have space for them, where it works," as Stork said.

The bridge at Römerstraße will be more bicycle-friendly

There is probably less space at the bridge near the Roman road, which is important for pedestrians and cyclists.

According to the city building authority, it should be “less accessible and more bicycle-friendly than before”.

Because it also has to be higher above the stream, significantly longer ramps are required for the ascent and descent.

The concrete bridge is therefore being rebuilt a little further east, with a width of 1.80 to two meters.

However, cyclists will “continue to have to dismount there”, emphasized Stork, “as before”.

The ramp will then have a gradient of about eight percent.

The smaller bridges are reduced and relocated

The construction committee unanimously approved this new bridge construction as well as changes to the small wooden bridges in this area.

"In order to protect five to six trees in the stock," these little bridges between Gögerlweg and Rastkapellenstrasse will be reduced from three to two and "relocated to suitable locations".

The foundations for this are already finished in the first area, as it was said.

In the area with ensemble protection, the Monuments Office was also informed of the change.
