After twice taped himself to the street in Munich, a climate activist ended up in police custody.

Now he's taking drastic action.

Munich – A climate activist who has been in police custody for a week after two sticking actions has gone on a hunger strike.

The police headquarters announced on Wednesday that he had refused to accept food for the first time on Tuesday.

The 48-year-old is being medically monitored and regularly examined.

According to the police, the man initially took part in the first of the two roadblocks at Stachus in downtown Munich on November 3rd.

After a second action on November 7th, he was taken into custody.

He is one of a group of 13 climate activists who were taken into police custody until December 2 after blockade actions.

Other participants have already been released.

Those affected are housed in the Stadelheim prison, separated from the prisoners as far as possible.

It is still unclear whether all climate activists will actually have to stay there until the beginning of December.

The police are obliged to continuously check the conditions of custody, said a police spokesman.

"Of course it is in the room that early layoffs are also conceivable."

In principle, however, the period can also be extended by a further month after a corresponding judicial decision.

The controversial measure is intended to prevent the commission or continuation of an administrative offense "of considerable importance to the general public" or a criminal offence.

Munich demonstrate for the release of activists

According to the police, around 700 people, according to the organizers 800 to 1000 people, demonstrated loudly in Munich on Sunday for the release of the climate activists.

“They work to protect our livelihoods and are arbitrarily locked away for it.

Meanwhile, the state and corporations continue to destroy our planet without any punishment,” said one of the spokespersons for the organizational alliance.

The alliance of around 40 groups also called for the abolition of preventive custody.

The Bavarian police had taken a total of 33 climate activists into long-term custody in the past few weeks.

The state government had the option to take climate activists into custody for a month as a preventive measure, most recently defended as an act of a well-fortified democracy.

However, several lawsuits are still pending before the Bavarian Constitutional Court, which are also directed against preventive detention.
