The Secretary for Transport and Logistics, Lin Shixiong, ordered MTR to submit a preliminary investigation report today (16th), including the initial cause of the accident.
MTR submitted a report to the bureau this afternoon. At 4:30 p.m., train director Li Jiarun, train operations and local railway supervisor Huang Kunwei met with the media to explain the results.
Li Jiarun mentioned a few days ago that the preliminary investigation found that the metal guardrail components beside the track were displaced, which belonged to the guardrail of the track ventilation system and other facilities, not the light box, signal system or cable support that caused the train to deviate from the track.

He pointed out that according to the contingency mechanism, nearly 900 shuttle buses were dispatched that day.
On the same day, more than 100 staff worked overnight to replace the track and equipment, so that the Tsuen Wan Line service could be resumed the next morning.
He emphasized that he was as concerned about the accident as the public. He believed that the cause was that before entering Yau Ma Tei Station, the metal guardrail of a tunnel was displaced and collided with the train, causing the first bogie of the head truck to deviate from the track, and the two pairs of doors of the head truck after entering the platform. The position of the metal guardrail is placed in the space in the tunnel pipe. At that time, it was displaced and collided with the train. It is believed that this is the cause of the incident.

Li Jiayun pointed out that he will conduct in-depth research on the causes, including component maintenance arrangements, usage and wear and tear, environmental factors, design intentions, etc.; at the same time, he will conduct in-depth inspections on train tracks and platform screen doors to determine the causes.
After receiving the trains that day, the MTR has inspected more than 30 trackside guardrail devices.
Li Jiarun also pointed out that on that day, the staff initially learned that two trains had entered the platform. After assessing the situation, the train operation control center originally intended to arrange for passengers to return to the YMT station platform from the car curtain door with the assistance of the staff. The bus captain maintained communication, but there may be some deficiencies in the content of the broadcast that day, and the arrangement was not fully explained clearly, which caused some people to push the emergency exit ramp at the rear of the car and leave the car.
