The Historical Association recently held its Leonhardi meeting.

The members can look back on a successful pilgrimage.

Demands for sanctions for breaking the step-by-step rule are still getting loud.

Bad Tölz

– This year's Tölz Leonhardifahrt was a picture book pilgrimage: beautiful horse and carts, splendidly decorated wagons, people in festive clothes on the wagons and also in the rows of spectators, an impressive service, an accident-free process in glorious late autumn weather.

All those present at the traditional Leonhardi debriefing of the Historical Association came to this consensual conclusion.

This time, the meeting, which is accessible to anyone interested, took place in the Tölz town hall.

Despite the general satisfaction expressed about the "most beautiful Isarwinkl festival" held on Monday last week, as Claus Janßen, chairman of the historical association, put it, there were still a few points of discussion in the group.

First and foremost, the carters present were concerned with the "walking pace" required by the city for safety reasons this year for the first time via Marktstraße to the Mühlfeldkirche and the related history.

During the previous Leonhardi rides, the teams were still allowed to trot, but galloping had been forbidden for several years.

According to the announcement, those who do not comply will not be allowed to participate next year.

"There must be consequences, otherwise everyone does what they want."

The fact that the wagon, which caused a serious accident on the last trip before Corona, i.e. in 2019, was still there again this year, is incomprehensible, according to some Rosser.

Other participants have already been sanctioned for lesser things.

"There must be consequences, otherwise everyone does what they want." This must also apply to the few teams that did not stick to walking this year.

Leonhardilader Anton Mayer assured the complainants that they would talk to the people concerned and then discuss them.

“We will then make the decisions next year.”

On the whole, Leonhardi leader Anton Mayer, Mayor Ingo Mehner, Claus Janßen (Chairman of the Historical Association) and Sebastian Lindmeyr (Secretary of the Historical Association) were (from the front) satisfied with the course of the Leonhardi ride.

In general, the goal of all those involved must be to maintain the Leonhardifahrt for the future, the group of people gathered in the meeting room agreed with Mayor Ingo Mehner.

The city, as the organizer, has to have the pilgrimage re-approved every year by submitting a security concept.

This includes minimizing all known risks as far as possible.

"The past is the past," emphasized Anton Mayer.

"What used to be possible is no longer possible today." The steeds aren't the same as they used to be either: through breeding and less work-related stress, the cold-blooded farmer's horses have also become "racing cars", so to speak.

The walking pace was not introduced for fun and frolics – the Marktstraße-Khanturm-Mühlfeldkirche section was proven to be the accident black spot.

Smaller fence units in the market street could defuse dangerous situations

Leonhardi driver Hans Mayer was also concerned about safety along the route: The iron railings lined up in Marktstraße, which are intended to limit the area for spectators and keep the train route free, are linked together with nylon ropes - "if a horse or a wagon threads in, then the bars fall down with a crash all along the street.

Frightening the horses could have bad consequences.” The mayor and the two loaders promised that this information would be followed up and that the dangerous situation would be mitigated by smaller fence units.

Finally, carter Klaus Mayer raised another topic: He didn't like the security people "with their aggressive faces and their uniforms - they don't suit us.

You could also hire firefighters."

Mayor Mehner explained that the task at the Leonhardi ride, which is officially considered a major event, is different from the “usual” fire service.

"It's not just about rejecting visitors with dogs, but also about intervening in a bar fight during the course of the day.

There have been unpleasant situations in the past.”

The security team is part of the security concept, Anton Mayer explained, the police and rescue workers are happy that they are there.

In addition, firefighters are often "ignored and not taken seriously by the viewers and sometimes have to be spoken to stupidly".

This is not the place of action for fire brigades.

In general, the Laders and Claus Janßen on behalf of the historical association thanked everyone "who worked on the Leonhardi ride" and last but not least the city, "which is putting a lot of effort into this festival".
