Less hot water, double duty care: nine actions for more energy sobriety in the bathroom

2022-11-17T10:35:11.031Z

The Federation of Beauty Companies and the government have just unveiled a campaign to raise awareness of eco-gestures that can change things for the planet.

Ecology, energy sobriety, the environment... Words which are now part of our daily lives and which must encourage us to change our habits.

And the reflexes to adopt or modify begin in the bathroom.

For this reason, the FEBEA (Federation of Beauty Companies) and the government have joined forces for a campaign highlighting the small gestures that will make a difference.

In total, nine habits are listed, and which mainly concern the shower ritual.

Everyone understood that the baths should remain occasional.

But even if the shower is a daily reflex, its use can still be optimized for the good of the planet.

Thus, it is recommended to invest in an economical shower head that protects the skin from limescale while reducing water consumption by half.

It is also advisable to stay under water for less time, but also to reduce the temperature in order to protect the skin and save energy.

In the same spirit, it is necessary to get into the habit, if it has not already been done, of turning off the water when brushing your teeth, shaving or washing your face.

Small reflexes to adopt

But changes are also to be made in the consumption habits of care and hygiene products.

Thus, one will prefer those which do not rinse or those which make double use, even triple or more still, in order to always reduce the water consumption but also to generate less waste.

To accentuate this point, we also think of eco-refills and bulk products.

FEBEA and the government also encourage the cutting of empty tubes to recover the bottom of the products, in order to avoid waste.

Finally, always with a concern for energy sobriety, a last gesture consists in unplugging the electrical appliances on standby in the bathroom;

a way of also avoiding domestic accidents.

This campaign follows a study by FEBEA in partnership with Opinion Way on the habits of French people in their bathroom.

It emerges that more than one in three has difficulty anchoring good gestures in their habits;

even if 8 out of 10 respondents feel concerned by the subject.

Question saving water, 81% of French people have the habit of reducing the duration of their showers, 86% of turning off the water when they soap or shampoo.

While 60% say they use a water saver installed on their faucets.

How long can we stay in the shower for the good of the planet?

Last June, the ADEME (Ecological Transition Agency) called for the duration of showers to be limited to “5 minutes at the most”.

The French stay there on average 4 minutes but 30% admit to spending more than 5 minutes there.

And in the case of shampoo, one out of two exceeds this recommended timing.

Contrary to all expectations, it is the over 50s who adopt best practices the most, while the under 35s admit having more difficulty adopting these new habits and see eco-gestures as constraints.

For this age group, which is also called the "climate generation", it is more in consumption habits that the commitment manifests itself: reusable products, solid formats, in bulk, non-rinsed products... 48% of young people always use at least one of these types of products, compared to 29% of seniors.
