Public transport: the great weariness of the French

2022-11-17T16:05:03.930Z

SURVEY - Only 27% of people living in rural areas believe that the supply of public transport around their homes is satisfactory, according to an Odoxa-Backbone Consulting survey for Le Figaro.

What do the French think of public transport?

A survey conducted by Odoxa-Backbone-Consulting for

Le Figaro

looked at the perception our compatriots have of metros, trams and other trains.

First lesson: 49% prefer to use an individual mode of transport such as car, scooter, bicycle... Among them, unsurprisingly, many inhabitants of rural areas and the elderly.

On the other hand, 28% - including many young people and inhabitants of the Paris agglomeration - regularly use public transport.

22% would also be ready to do so regularly

“when the supply of public transport allows it”

.

In total, three quarters of French people use public transport at least from time to time.

Asked about their satisfaction with the public transport offer around their home, 57% of French people answer favourably.

The most satisfied are those living in the Paris region (80%), when only 27% of rural people are of this opinion.

Important clarification: when only French people who regularly use public transport are questioned, the rate of satisfaction concerning the surrounding offer climbs to... 81%.

A week after the very strong disturbances which affected Île-de-France, Odoxa ensures that

“the image of public transport is strongly associated with strikes”.

In the event of a social movement, 75% of French people would be in favor of extending the minimum service by having more recourse to requisitioning personnel, and 46% are even in favor of banning the right to strike in public transport.

The TGV, perceived as safe... but expensive

The survey then focuses on the different means of public transport existing in France.

The TGV is the mode of transport in which users of the various types of public transport have the most confidence in leaving and arriving on time (71%).

It is also considered the safest form of public transport.

On the other hand, the tariffs of the TGV are considered too expensive by two thirds of the users.

Regarding the other trains - Intercités, TER -, users are very divided.

47% consider that they are reliable regarding timetables, 50% that the safety on board is satisfactory, 50% that these trains are secure.

In addition, two thirds of users appreciate buses and coaches for their fares, safety and reliability.

Finally, if the metros, trams and RER are rather well perceived in terms of respecting timetables (66%), they have a very bad reputation on safety.

69% of users are dissatisfied with it.

* This survey was conducted online on November 16 and 17 with a sample of 1,005 French people representative of the French population aged 18 and over.
