The Holzner butcher shop in Lenggries, known for its white sausages, will close in a few days.

The owner cites energy prices as one reason.

Lenggries

– An era ends in Lenggries on November 30th: After 64 years in family ownership, the Holzner butcher’s shop will be closed forever.

With a view to the lack of staff and the rapidly increasing energy prices, owner Manfred Holzner says: "At some point it will no longer pay off."

Difficult years lie behind Metzgerei Holzner

The Lenggrieser butcher shop has a long tradition.

In 1958 Jakob and Ottilie Holzner opened the business in today's "Wieserwirt".

In 1969 they moved to the shop at Bahnhofplatz 3b.

In 1996 they handed over the business to their son Manfred, who still runs the butcher's shop today.

The past three years have been “very difficult,” says the business owner.

Due to corona, staff was repeatedly absent for several weeks.

The Holzners therefore had to work many additional shifts themselves: "That took a toll on our strength and nerves," says Holzner: "Working seven days a week – at some point it's enough."

Energy crisis brings traditional butcher shop to its knees

And then there was the energy crisis, which hit butcher shops, as major consumers, extremely hard.

The freezer and the air conditioning run day and night, the ovens and machines for sausage production require high-voltage current.

Part of the farm runs on gas.

To make matters worse, Holzner's electricity contract expires on December 31st.

A few months ago, the owner got a new offer from his provider - and almost fell out of his feet with shock: "The price was suddenly many times higher." It didn't look any better with other providers either: "All the offers were equally bad. After many sleepless nights, Holzner came to the conclusion that he had to shut down his business.

The decision is “bad” for some regular customers, says the owner: “Many stock up on large supplies and have things vacuumed.” Apart from a few Italian salami specialties, he made all the products himself, especially for the white sausages the butcher's shop is known beyond the local borders: "The recipe isn't anywhere, it's in my head."

Children do not want to take over the butcher shop in Lenggries

The question now is how to proceed.

All three children are unemployed and have no interest in taking over the business.

The eleven employees had long since found new jobs on the empty job market.

The future of the business owners, on the other hand, is open.

Manfred Holzner will be 60 this year, his wife Anni next year.

Both are still too young to retire.

The two want to continue working, "but not as many hours."

At the moment he sees the operational task as "emotionless": "We are pleased that we have made the decision.

The pressure of having to pay employees will no longer apply in the future.”

In December and January he will probably be busy completing the operation, says Holzner.

He hopes that a successor will contact him who wants to take over the business.

For this reason he does not sell the inventory yet.

His successor may also have a good start, he muses, since energy prices have been falling sharply again for a few weeks.

"But I couldn't put off the decision that long in the summer.

At some point I have to make a decision, after all I have to comply with notice periods.”

Incidentally, in the neighboring Fruchthaus Holzner, which belongs to his brother Jakob and his wife Veronika, business continues as normal: “They don’t produce anything themselves, so they don’t have any energy problems.”
