A 53-year-old from Austria drove his Mercedes-Benz into a transformer house between Oberau and Eschenlohe.
Because this supplies the Oberau Tunnel with electricity, one tube had to be closed.
Oberau – A serious accident occurred on Thursday evening (November 17) at around 5.40 p.m. on the federal highway 2 between Oberau and Eschenlohe.
For reasons that have not yet been clarified, a 53-year-old driver from Austria who was driving in the direction of the A 95 briefly lost consciousness.
His Mercedes station wagon went off the road and ultimately crashed head-on into a transformer house.
After the impact, the driver regained consciousness and got out uninjured.
The car was a total loss of around 25,000 euros.
The problem: According to the police, the damaged distribution box supplies the Oberau tunnel tube and the height control at the access with electricity.
The accident led to a technical failure - and the tube towards Garmisch-Partenkirchen had to be closed from 7 p.m.
A diversion via Oberau was set up.
This was only unusable for vehicles over 24 tons, so that trucks were jammed in front of the tunnel.
This was released again around 7:45 p.m.
Since it could not be ruled out that the junction box and the vehicle were live, the Oberau fire brigade was on site with over 20 emergency services to rescue the car.
"We were only able to approach the vehicle after the transformer had been disconnected from the grid by the energy supplier," reports Operations Manager Florian Schindlbeck.
