Ukraine: Reports of torture in Kherson "There were horrific screams"

Abuse with electric shocks and rubber truncheons: According to Ukrainian sources, civilians and soldiers were tortured on a large scale during the Russian occupation in recaptured Cherson.

Before the invasion began in February, he fought in eastern Ukraine, says Maksym.

There were horrible screams.

For me personally, that was the most terrifying experience.«

The Prosecutor General of the region Volodymyr Kaliuha reports that four torture chambers in the liberated areas have already been inspected.

We already know of 43 victims.

Some have contacted us themselves, others have been reported by family members.

We are sure that there will be more cases.«

The tortured told him about being beaten with rubber and wooden clubs and electric shocks, as well as being forced to wear gas masks.

A police spokesman said that 17 Ukrainian soldiers were also shot dead here.

The Reuters news agency has not been able to independently verify all of the statements made by the residents of Kherson.

Dmytro Lubinets, the Human Rights Commissioner of the Ukrainian Parliament, published this video on social media on Thursday.

It shows a room in Cherson in which, according to him, prisoners were interrogated and tortured.

Electric shocks were also used here to force confessions, says Lubinets.

Moscow has denied allegations of ill-treatment of civilians and soldiers.

The UN human rights office said on Tuesday it had found evidence that both sides had tortured prisoners of war.

Torture is classified as a war crime by the International Criminal Court.
