2022-11-19T13:54:00.652Z

The event took place near the city of St. Petersburg • The cause is being investigated • Earlier, on the Russian island of Sakhalin, gas cylinders exploded - and collapsed five floors of a building; Nine were killed

Accident or intentional damage?

Northeast of St. Petersburg, an explosion occurred in the gas pipeline a short time ago.

There is a huge fire, two fire brigades were called to the scene.

As of now, no injuries have been reported in the incident.

The cause of the explosion is being investigated and one of the hypotheses that has been put forward - but has no verification - is that it was a Ukrainian sabotage.

Not far from St. Petersburg, in the Pskov region, two combat helicopters were destroyed a few weeks ago.

Ukraine never accepted responsibility.

If it is an accident, this is the second gas failure in Russia in less than a day.

Earlier, gas cylinders exploded in a residential building in the town of Timovskoye on Sakhalin Island in the Russian Far East.

Nine people, including four children, were killed in the disaster.

All five floors of the entrance to the building collapsed from the force of the explosion.

The explosion blew the doors off the nearby entrances.

The building was not connected to a gas pipeline.

Russia is one of the largest suppliers of gas in the world, but almost 40% of its households are not connected to the pipeline.

The reason: despite the copy profits, the state gas corporation Gazprom believes that it is not profitable to connect communities that are not close to the main pipelines.
