Nuremberg is heavily indebted – the city council is currently deliberating on the draft budget for 2023. Among other things, massive job cuts are in the pipeline.

Nuremberg – It is not a pleasant topic that the city council had to discuss.

The fact is: Nuremberg is heavily in debt.

In February, the district government of Middle Franconia only reluctantly approved the budget as a municipal supervisor and under strict conditions.

The result is a strict austerity course.

Late on Thursday afternoon, November 17, after six hours of deliberation, the budget for 2023 was finally in place. The heavily indebted city wants to save 50 million euros annually by 2026.

Following the city council meeting, Mayor Marcus König (CSU) declared that the new austerity package had helped to consolidate the budget.

"At the same time, the resolutions are strengthening important areas such as childcare and education, climate protection and mobility, digitization and health protection," says König according to a press release from the town hall.

The city's financial problems are mainly due to rising personnel and energy costs and social spending.

In the coming years, savings are to be made in many areas - among other things, 500 full-time positions are to be cut.

How these should be compensated is explained as follows:

The city's business areas are asked to develop concepts as to which services and standards must be eliminated or reduced as a result of the job cuts.

These are then to be presented to the respective specialist committees or the city council and discussed.

In addition, savings are to be implemented in the medium term through the ongoing digitization of administrative processes.”
