Three residents of Wadi Ara were detained on Friday on suspicion of attempting to rob antiquities in the Megiddo area in the north.

The three, aged 64, 40 and 37, were seen near the antiquities site with metal detectors and pickaxes for digging.

They were transferred to the Antiquities Robbery Prevention Unit for investigation.



The case was discovered during an enforcement operation by the Israel Police and the Border Guard together with volunteers from Megiddo communities.

It is about the enforcement of traffic laws in the open areas, to prevent the offenses of reckless driving and damage to the fields by drivers of motorized vehicles.



The police said that they are working against antiquities thieves, who are looting excavation sites and historical places in Israel: "These are properties that belong to the general public in Israel, and therefore trading in them is a criminal offense."

A week ago, ancient coins buried in the ground were uncovered during a search for illegal weapons.

The treasure was discovered by the Mageb police officers during a search for weapons they conducted in a compound near a dairy in Kfar Kana in the north. The owner of the land was summoned for questioning and the coins were taken and transferred to the Antiquities Robbery Prevention Unit at the Antiquities Authority.



Robbery of antiquities from archaeological sites is a common phenomenon that may yield the criminals a large financial gain, and damages the findings important historical sites and causes irreversible damage. Exactly one year ago, an identical case occurred in the north, when during a search activity for weapons and means of warfare, conducted in the village of Bir el Maksor near Shafaram, the police seized 538 coins that had been looted from antiquities sites.
