The farmer, Bashar Hisham Qateel, transformed his house and the surrounding land of 3 dunums, located on the Hama-Sarihin road, into a nursery to produce new varieties of seedlings of fruit and forest trees, ornamental plants, and roses in various shapes and colors that are rare in Syria, from imported seeds and clean organic fertilizer free of chemicals and residues. Farmer Bashar, who is currently the head of the Agricultural Nurseries Committee in Hama Governorate, explained in a statement to SANA reporter that his house is frequented by the governorate’s farmers to acquire new seedlings of the introduced varieties and to learn about the optimal method of planting and caring for them, indicating that he conducted agricultural experiments on imported seeds that are rare in the country. Syria, especially in the province of Hama, as a result of the terrorist war and the unfair economic blockade on Syria, and it was brought from different countries such as Italy, Lebanon, Jordan and Iraq, and it was crowned with success in producing new varieties of fruit tree seedlings, including the dwarf walnut, the ornamental variety such as tuya, and the forest variety such as coriander and pepper, and new varieties of flowers such as geranium and jasmine. The farmer, Bashar, added that it was produced in the Allende cypress nursery, which was imported from Italy, and the experience of cultivating and grafting it within its nursery took two years. Currently, more than 600,000 seedlings are produced from it, and there is a demand for it locally and from Arab countries, especially Lebanon and Iraq, which have begun to import the product from nurseries. Hama instead of Italy, due to the large price difference and the quality of the produced seedlings, which are subject to special breeding conditions in plastic houses and placed in tightly closed bags for a period of 40 days when grafted or pruned.

He pointed out that experiments are currently underway to produce resistant varieties of olive seedlings that are resistant to the peacock eye disease, tuberculosis and the olive fly, as well as on pomegranate seedlings from the large fruits, and to benefit from the fruits located within the Al-Qabbah area, west of the governorate, which is famous for cultivating and producing the finest varieties of pomegranate.

For his part, the head of the Plant Production Department in the Hama Agriculture Directorate, Eng. Bassam Al-Nashar, pointed out in a similar statement to the development of the work of agricultural nurseries in the governorate, which number more than 400, and they produce more than 100 million forestry, ornamental, and fruitful seedlings annually, which makes them an important center of gravity in the production of various crops. Forestry and fruitful plants at the level of Syria and a major tributary in the agricultural process with trees, shrubs and flowers that are propagated in a scientific way that is compatible with the nature of the land, the weather and the need for agriculture.

Al-Nashar pointed out that the supervisors of these nurseries, including technicians, agricultural engineers, and producers, were able to acclimate plants that were imported from Arab and European countries to the local environment, by improving soil properties, controlling irrigation operations, and caring for seedlings in their early stages, by means of regular fertilization and resistance to high temperatures.

In their turn, Abdelkader Qassabashi and Mahmoud Al-Aswad, who work in agricultural nurseries, pointed out the necessity of providing fertilizers and fuel, granting incentive loans to expand the work of nurseries, and coordinating with agricultural research centers to develop new and environmentally friendly varieties and providing facilities for marketing the product in foreign markets, in addition to establishing a city for agricultural nurseries similar to Large nurseries in the world and the establishment of special festivals for flowers and ornamental plants in various regions and governorates and the activation of local markets specialized in them.
