It all started with an idea.

But now Philipp Riedel (20) and Luca Gruber (22) are selling their vegan protein drink with great success.

Zorneding – Founding a company.

The decision is made quickly, but very few are really aware of what implementation will entail.

Philipp Riedl (20) from Ingelsberg and Luca Gruber (22) from Zorneding took the plunge in the summer of 2020 and founded their start-up "Vetain".

The two of them had the idea of producing vegan protein powder in 2019, because many people get a rash on their backs from conventional protein powder that contains whey protein.

There were only a few vegan alternatives back then, and "they were really sweet, disgusting and really artificial," says Riedl.

The two wanted to produce a better alternative.

The first challenge for the young men: where do you actually get the various raw materials from?

Because most providers only sell huge quantities.

They found a wholesaler who sent them samples.

"Ordered without a tax number and with a gmail address," laughs Riedl.

"I'm surprised anyway that he sent us something."

Foundation of the company directly after high school

The tests allowed them to directly compare the individual components and different manufacturers for the first time.

So they developed and improved their own recipe step by step.

The next step: build a website.

"Then we had to think: what is our positioning and what values do we represent?" explains Riedl.

Everything should be as environmentally friendly as possible, the two decided, and that's how the start-up got its name: "Vetain", which is made up of "vegan" and the English word "sustainable".

They finally founded the company immediately after graduating from high school.

Starting capital 4000 euros private assets.

A packaging for the protein powder was needed.

"It's all super opaque," says Riedl.

"As a small entrepreneur, you can't find anything." In the depths of Google, they finally found what they were looking for: packaging that is completely biodegradable, from a manufacturer in Germany.

The catch: minimum order quantity 10,000 pieces.

"We couldn't spend all the money on the packaging, we also have to buy ingredients," explains Riedl.

"But we also don't want to make any compromises when it comes to sustainability and quality." That's why the two launched an online campaign to collect money.

In this way, 16,000 euros were collected within three weeks, and the first goods financing was thus secured.

When they finally got the first six pallets of their protein powder delivered after a delay,

Start of sales at the unfavorable date

Gruber and Riedl then started selling around Christmas.

In retrospect, you know: Christmas is not the right time for protein shakes.

In January, however, orders increased rapidly.

"We had no idea how important marketing actually is," says Riedl.

While the business was slowly taking off, they also improved their understanding of the target group and adjusted their advertising strategies.

Other areas of the company were also continuously adapted: the recipes were improved, a logistics company had to be found so that everything no longer had to be stored in the company's own basement.

"It also saves us an incredible amount of time," says Riedl.

Did they anticipate everything that came their way?

Both laugh.

no

"The tax alone," says Riedl.

“YouTube helps, as does Gründer.de, for example.

There are so many legal forms, which one is the right one?

GmbH, UG, GbR?”

Above all, Facebook advertising is extremely important, the two know today.

Before that, her company account on Facebook was blocked for a year because she had registered it incorrectly.

The subject of double-entry bookkeeping was also new for Riedl and Gruber.

"What you have to register!" Register your business, tax registration forms, pay the IHK contribution.

There are many scammers out there who write to newly founded companies and want money from them.

So many things an entrepreneur needs to know

But the list is even longer: broadcasting contributions, articles of association, procurement of goods, comparing prices.

“We somehow had to be experts everywhere,” says Gruber.

"And you're playing against people who have a lot deeper pockets than you and who've been around a lot longer."

And the balancing act "how much money do I have available, how much do I buy" is still a challenge.

The two taught themselves as much as possible.

And they are accurate in what they do.

Around 20,000 euros have already flowed into the start-up.

"We don't want to take it so laxly and end up hitting a wall," says Riedl.

And they are confident: Because while they were working on their start-up, protein powder became a trend.

"This is no longer a niche product," explains Riedl.

"But for everyone who wants to eat healthily."
