The opening game of the 2022 World Cup will be remembered as one of the most one-sided opening games in history: the Ecuadorian team won 0:2 this evening (Sunday) over the host Qatar in the game that kicked off the World Cup.
Many commentators predicted a close match at El Hur Stadium, mainly because of the home team and the fact that Ecuador is not one of the strongest teams in the tournament.
But on the field we mainly saw one team, or rather one player.
Fenerbahçe player Ener Valencia did his best in the first half.
It started with an early goal that was disallowed due to a very limited difference (5), continued with a penalty goal, which he squeezed after the goalkeeper's failure on him and continued with the second with a shot (31) that broke the Qataris, who in the first half barely passed the half.
In the second half, the game balanced out a bit, but the Qataris hardly threatened the goal and did not kick even once into the frame during the entire 90 minutes, and in this capacity they have nothing to sell in this tournament.
The Qataris will try to take first points from mana-less Senegal in their next match while the Ecuadorians meet the powerful Netherlands in five days' time and will hope that Valencia, who was substituted in the second half due to knee pain, will be fit for this contest.
