Not new: North Korea is testing missiles and threatening the United States.

What's new is that Kim Jon-un is presenting a daughter.

An expert suspects calculus.

Pyongyang - North Korea has launched another ICBM.

But this time the saber-rattling was accompanied by a novelty: North Korea's ruler Kim Jong-un presented his daughter to the public for the first time.

Kim was present "along with his beloved daughter and his wife" at the launch of an ICBM on Friday, the state news agency KCNA reported on Saturday.

The ruler also threatened the United States after the missile test was "successful" according to KCNA.

Photos showed Kim and a girl wearing a white winter jacket and red shoes holding hands in front of the rocket.

Kim's children have never been mentioned in state media.

So far, it has not even been officially confirmed that the ruler has children.

According to South Korean intelligence, Kim has been married to Ri Sol Ju since 2009, and they had children in 2010, 2013 and 2017.

Kim Jong-un probably wanted to demonstrate his family ties with the unexpected action.

The photos could be a carefully staged attempt to present themselves as a "normal" leader.

The daughter pictured is believed to be Ju Ae, Cheong Seong Chang of the Center for North Korean Studies at the Sejong Institute in South Korea told AFP.

She is likely Kim's second child.

The fact that she is now being presented to the public could indicate that Kim later wants to make her his successor.

The only comments about Kim's family background have come from former US basketball star Dennis Rodman, who visited North Korea in 2013.

He then reported that he met a young daughter of Kim named Ju Ae.

Missile test in North Korea: Pyongyang successfully tests "monster missile"

As KCNA further reported on Saturday, the test missile was a Hwasong-17 missile, which analysts call a "monster missile".

The test was "successful", it said.

North Korea now has another “reliable” means of “containing any nuclear threat”.

According to KCNA, Kim accused the US in particular of threatening his country and warned that Pyongyang will respond “to nuclear weapons with nuclear weapons and to total confrontation with all-out confrontation”.

The South Korean army announced further joint military exercises with the United States on Saturday, in which US B-1B fighter jets are also to be used.

These jets no longer carry nuclear weapons, but are referred to by the US Air Force as the "backbone of America's long-range bombers."

Missile test in North Korea: US and EU criticize North Korean missile test

North Korea has drawn international criticism for its missile test.

According to Japanese information, the projectile fell west of the island of Hokkaido in the sea.

The United States and its allies condemned the missile test "in the strongest terms".

The European Union also condemned the missile test and criticized it on Saturday as "dangerous, illegal and ruthless".

A joint statement said the EU was "deeply concerned".

Pyongyang's ongoing efforts to develop weapons of mass destruction "threaten all countries".

North Korea must give up all its programs to develop nuclear weapons and other weapons of mass destruction.

The UN Security Council must respond "appropriately to the growing threat" from Pyongyang.
