Anna-Laura de la Iglesia y Nikolaus gives a lecture on the future and past of the monastery in Beuerberg.

Beuerberg

– The Beuerberg monastery is currently a major construction site.

Interested parties can find out more about what will happen in the plant once the scaffolding has been dismantled on Monday evening.

In a lecture from the series “Monastery Life – Monastery Women – Yesterday.Today.Tomorrow”, Dr.

Anna-Laura de la Iglesia y Nikolaus a cautious outlook.

“Of course I can say what we are planning.

I just can't decide how quickly this will be realized.

The construction work is still going on," says the specialist at the Diocesan Museum in Freising.

"But I will tell you how it came about that we took over Beuerberg, what measures were developed - and how we are trying to develop Beuerberg further."

The lecture series, in which designers from the Bernried and Schlehdorf monasteries could already be experienced, also deals with "how to deal with such former monasteries, what can be done with the stock, if it still exists," explains Iglesia.

With regard to Beuerberg, there is no more profound expert than the researcher at the Diocesan Museum.

After all, it was she who, after taking over the monastery, archived all the inventory that the sisters had left behind when they moved out in May 2014: not a crucifix, not a picture, not a jar that she did not have in her hand.

"Beuerberg was and is for us an experimental field, a precedent for what you can do with monasteries if you take them over as a non-monastic institution," explains Iglesia.

"And what kind of responsibility one has there, towards the former residents, towards the tradition of the place, towards the works of art that one takes over." After all, it's not just about archiving things, but actually making the inventory accessible - " not in a sensationalist way, according to the motto, what is it like behind monastery walls, but that one really tries to respect the origin of these things, the places from which they come.” This is practiced in an exemplary manner in Beuerberg Monastery.

"Do we need monasteries in the future?" is an essential question in the event of the Kreisbildungswerk on Monday.

Iglesia doesn't have a clear answer either.

“I think we definitely need spiritual places, including spiritual learning places.

The future will have to show whether that can be the traditional monasteries or whether we need something else.”
