About twenty people were killed today (Monday) and more than 300 were injured in an earthquake measuring 5.6 on the Richter scale, in the province of West Java in Indonesia, according to a report by a local official.
Herman Suhrman, a government official from the city of Chianjur, where the epicenter was felt, told the MetroTV news channel that about 20 people were killed in a hospital in the area.
"It is about one hospital. There are four hospitals in the city," he said, adding that the number of dead and injured may rise.
West Java is a province in the west of the island of Java in Indonesia.
According to the latest census from 2020, the population of the district was about 48.2 million inhabitants, the most populated in the country.

In June, at least a thousand people were killed in an earthquake that occurred in eastern Afghanistan on the border with Pakistan.
The earthquake had a magnitude of 6.1, according to the United States Geological Survey.
This is the deadliest earthquake in Afghanistan in two decades.
