A navy boat could become the inspiration for a pirate ship that stands on a children's playground in Wolfratshausen.

A Green City Councilor frowns.

Wolfratshausen – The city invested around 65,000 euros in the redesign of the playground at the multi-purpose hall in the Farchet district.

But one important detail is missing except for the day: the skull and crossbones flag for the wooden pirate ship.

City Councilor Gerlinde Berchtold (SPD) has now taken the initiative.

But her move raised a frown from one of her counterparts.

Green Council wrinkled its nose

As reported, a mothers' initiative, led by Carolin Mayer and Daniela Ruben, campaigned for the redesign of the playground.

Planning began in 2018, and the newly designed playground was recently inaugurated.

The centerpiece is a wooden pirate ship with masts, slide and climbing net.

But until now, the little pirates have had to set sail without the skull and crossbones flag that was feared on the seven seas.

SPD city councilor Berchtold feels at the corvette captain

According to Gerlinde Berchtold, this cannot go on like this.

In August, together with a good dozen Wolfratshausers, she visited the “Oste”, a fleet service boat of the German Navy (we reported).

Since 2003, the rafting town has been the official sponsor of the 36-man crew of the boat that was put into service in June 1988.

The sponsorship was sealed by the then corvette captain Ingo Wolf and the then mayor of Wolfratshausen, Reiner Berchtold, on the occasion of the 1000-year celebration of the Loisachstadt.

Previously, the municipality was the godfather of the S 47 "Jaguar", a naval speedboat that was retired in September 2000.

"Oste": Coat of arms of the naval boat shows hedgehog, anchor and lightning

Reiner Berchtold's wife seized the opportunity in Eckernförde on the Baltic Sea and asked Lieutenant Commander Sebastian Westphal, commander of the "Oste", about the pirate flag.

She "feel it up," reported Gerlinde Berchtold with a smile at the most recent meeting of the city council's building committee.

Lo and behold: the lieutenant commander was "not averse".

In concrete terms: Westphal could imagine that the sponsored boat of the raftsmen's town would "sponsor the pirate ship".

A flag would be included in this deal, explicitly it would be a flag with the crest of the fleet service boat.

The coat of arms shows a white hedgehog over a yellow anchor and a yellow thunderbolt against a navy blue background.

Captain Johannes Dumrese, head of the press center of the German Navy and spokesman for the Inspector of the Navy, explains when asked: The hedgehog symbolizes the readiness for defense, the yellow anchor with lightning bolt is the reference to the primary task of the "Oste", that is sea-based electronic reconnaissance.

Sea Captain Dumrese knows Wolfratshausen quite well

Incidentally, Dumrese, born in 1965, knows Wolfratshausen quite well.

After his basic military training at the Mürwik Naval Academy in Flensburg and his seafaring training on the famous sail training ship "Gorch Fock", he became an officer.

Afterwards Dumrese was marine engineering officer on the "Jaguar".

The sea captain reported in an interview with our newspaper five to six times that he visited Wolfratshausen with the "Jaguar" crew.

Among other things, he remembers a raft trip, a trip to the Oktoberfest - "and above all the great hospitality of the city and the citizens of Wolfratshausen".

Lieutenant Karsten Bammann, Head of the Oste, adds to the "hedgehog", which found its way onto the coat of arms a good 35 years ago: According to oral tradition, "the origin lies in the old Low German fable of the hare and hedgehog, in which the seemingly inferior hedgehog beats the superior hare with brains and finesse".

Since the "Oste" as a reconnaissance unit of the Navy "does not have heavy weapons and we fulfill our mission with special sensors, a certain parallelism to the fable is obvious," says Bammann.

Green city council reacts skeptically to advance

At the meeting of the building committee, the head of the town hall, Klaus Heilinglechner (citizens' association), offered Berchtold the opportunity to talk to Lieutenant Commander Westphal about the matter of sponsorship.

However, skeptical was Dr.

Hans Schmidt on the idea of the SPD city councilor.

That a naval boat will be the godfather "for a children's playground" - the Green politician can't really get used to this idea.

Prior to any decisions in the matter of sponsorship/pirate ship, Mayor Heilinglechner emphasized that "a hedgehog" could be seen on the flag.

The lovable spiny animal is depicted entirely unarmed on the "Oste" crest.

"Oste" crew visits Wolfratshausen

Since 2003, the city of Wolfratshausen has been sponsoring the fleet service boat "Oste" of the German Navy.

On the occasion of the Christmas market, a delegation of eleven sailors will visit the rafting town from November 24th to 28th.

This was announced by the head of the city hall, Klaus Heilinglechner, at the most recent city council meeting.

"The delegation members run a stall at the Christmas market together with the Wolfratshausen Mountain Rifle Company." According to the mayor, the city administration organized a small program for the visit of the partial crew of the "Oste".
