The Nuremberg Christkindlesmarkt will take place as usual in 2022.

Merkur.de clarifies all questions regarding opening hours, program and energy saving measures.

Nuremberg – Year after year, the Christkindlesmarkt counts millions of visitors.

The Nuremberg Christmas market is one of the largest of its kind in the world - one of the most important in Germany anyway.

In both 2020 and 2021, the festival had to be canceled due to corona.

This year, however, Nuremberg invites you back to mulled wine and gingerbread.

Which program is scheduled for 2022 between November 25th and December 24th, 2022, and whether, in view of the energy crisis, deprivations should not be accepted after all.

An overview.

Not only one of the largest and most famous - the Nuremberg Christkindlesmarkt is also one of the oldest Christmas markets in the world.

According to information from the city of Nuremberg, the market was first mentioned in 1628 - at that time it was still celebrated as "Kindles-Marck".

Almost 400 years later, the folk festival enjoys great popularity with an average of around two million visitors per year.

Finally mulled wine and gingerbread again: Nuremberg is ending a two-year dry spell caused by corona and will open the Christkindlesmarkt again in 2022.

On Friday, November 25th, at 5.30 p.m., the opening of the Christmas market in Nuremberg is scheduled for 2022 – then at least the Christ Child will speak to the audience.

Between November 26 and December 23, between 10 a.m. and 9 p.m., visitors have the opportunity to get to know the Bavarian tradition of the pre-Christmas period.

Meanwhile, the end is scheduled for December 24th – Christmas Eve.

The Christmas market opens at 10 a.m. before it is finally over at 2 p.m.

Nuremberg Christkindlesmarkt: These offers will be available at the Christmas market in 2022

Most recently, it was 2019 when around two million visitors came to Middle Franconia for the Christmas festival.

Despite the forced two-year break, the traditions remain intact: on the Friday before the first Advent, the Christ Child opens the market.

In 2022 the clock will strike 5.30 p.m. when Christkind Teresa Windschall welcomes the first visitors to Nuremberg's main market between the Frauenkirche and the Schönem Brunnen.

Worth knowing about the Nuremberg Christmas market:

There is hardly a Nuremberg attraction that inspires as much as the Christkindlesmarkt.

As a tourist magnet, it has not only convinced locals for a long time.

Modeled on the Nuremberg Christmas market, the “Christkindlmarket” takes place in Chicago every year – just like in Milwaukee or Minnesota.

In addition, the Christmas market has often been the setting for numerous films and series.

Nuremberg Christmas Market 2022: Program for children and families

However, anyone who only appreciates the Nuremberg Christmas market for its Middle Franconian cuisine probably only saw half of the attractions on their last visit in 2019.

The walk through the market of the twin towns is particularly attractive.

Nuremberg makes common cause with countries like Nicaragua, China, Scotland, Spain, Romania or the Ukraine.

Arts and crafts and delicious specialties make a visit in 2022 an experience with international flair.

Also in 2022 there will be sweets, toys, art as well as Christmas and Christmas tree decorations distributed throughout the Christkindlesmarkt.

At the Nuremberg Christkindlesmarkt, families and children can of course expect a promising, full program again this year.

Whether historic fairground rides or fairytale hours: there is a lot on offer on Hans Sachs-Platz.

"Restricted in terms of space and time": Nuremberg Christmas market reacts to the energy crisis

In times of the energy crisis, it was initially questionable in the run-up to the planning to what extent the Nuremberg Christmas festival was compatible with energy-saving measures.

Bavaria's cities have already reacted to the crisis with various measures.

As City Councilor Michael Fraas (CSU) recently confirmed, Nuremberg must also do its part - it is inevitable that the Christkindlesmarkt will also be affected in 2022.

The CSU politician told the online portal

Infranken

that any measures would have "occupied the entire city administration" for "months".

The following decision has now been made in Nuremberg: The Christkindlesmarkt will be illuminated as usual in 2022.

In recent years, energy would have been saved by switching to LED lights.

However, in response to the energy crisis, lighting will continue to be “spatially and temporally restricted”.

According to the Nuremberg city council, the fact that the Christmas market will take place again in 2022 is an "affair of the heart" - one that does not lose its importance if the lights "will be switched off at 10 p.m. this year".
