Viktor Orbán has again provoked with a reference to a larger Hungary.
After a game of his national soccer team on Sunday evening, the Hungarian Prime Minister had himself filmed and photographed with a scarf showing a map of Hungary with parts of the EU countries Austria, Slovakia, Romania and Croatia.
There are also regions of today's Serbia and Ukraine.
The areas belonged to the Kingdom of Hungary until the end of the First World War.
On Sunday evening, Hungary beat Greece 2-1 in their last game of the year.
The longtime national player Balázs Dzsudzsák ended his career in the team.
In a video posted by Orbán himself on Instagram, Dzsudzsák can be seen presenting him with a shirt.
Orbán wears a fan scarf with significantly expanded borders.
provocations for years
It is not the first time that Orbán has sparked outrage with a reference to a larger Hungary.
In 2020, he posted a photo of a globe also showing the borders of the Kingdom of Hungary before the end of World War I.
The case caused irritation, especially in Croatia and Romania.
With the Treaty of Trianon of 1920, the Kingdom of Hungary lost large parts of its former territory.
In Hungary it is still considered a great historical disgrace.
Since the beginning of Orbán's tenure as prime minister, there have been ongoing disputes between Hungary and its neighboring countries over the rights of ethnic Hungarians living in the former territories of the kingdom.
Thus, under Orbán's governments, people from the minorities were generously given Hungarian passports.
This was viewed critically, especially in the run-up to elections in Hungary.
