At least 37 people were killed on Tuesday in a road accident involving several buses that collided in northeast Nigeria, authorities said.
The crash happened near the town of Maiduguri, when two commercial buses collided head-on and burst into flames.
A third bus then hit them, said Utten Boyi, head of the Borno State Road Safety Agency, quoted in a statement.
"Excessive speed"
“37 people have been confirmed dead, most of them burned
beyond recognition,” Utten Boyi said.
The bursting of a tire on the first bus, coupled with
“excessive speed”
according to the manager, was the cause of the tragedy.
Road accidents are common in Nigeria, where road conditions have deteriorated in recent weeks following heavy rains and floods, the country's worst in a decade.
Earlier on Tuesday, 17 people were killed and four injured when their bus rammed a truck near Nigeria's capital Abuja, local media reported.
On Saturday, nine people had drowned when their overloaded vehicle plunged into a roadblock after a tire burst near Kano in the north of the country, local officials said.
