On the side of parents and tourism stakeholders, the school holiday calendar is eagerly awaited each year.
It allows some to anticipate their next stays, others to have visibility on the tourist offer to be developed.
Traditionally, the dates are decided by decree in early summer for the following year.
Thus, the 2022/2023 calendar was set in July 2021. That of 2021/2022 was exceptionally established in December 2020 due to uncertainties related to the health context.
The dates of the 2023/2024 calendar, for their part, are slow to be fixed by the Ministry of National Education.
A delay that worries in particular the Confederation of Tourism Stakeholders (CAT).
Composed of 14 professional organizations in the sector (hotels, restaurants, river shipowners, ski areas, etc.), it recently questioned by letter the Minister Delegate for Tourism, Olivia Grégoire, on the need to be fixed as soon as possible.

Among the most anticipated dates, that of the start of the school year in 2023. Will it take place on Friday 1st or Monday 4th September?

It seems to us that the most suitable date is Monday, September 4.
[...] Indeed, any other choice would reduce the summer holidays from 8 to 7 full weeks, which would have the effect of concentrating demand on fewer weeks

A point of balance to be found
To establish the calendar of school holidays, the Ministry of National Education consults with representatives of the educational world, but also with actors from the economic world and tourism, whose constraints and requirements are sometimes difficult to reconcile.
Discussions must reach a point of balance while respecting the alternation of seven weeks of classes and two weeks of vacation recommended by chronobiologists.
However, the years 2023 and 2024 will be marked by major sporting events in France (in particular by the Paris 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games) vectors of strong tourist activity.
