"Why the syllabic method is by far the most effective for learning to read"

FIGAROVOX / TRIBUNE - A study unveiled by the Scientific Council for National Education shows that the syllabic method is among the least used by CP teachers. The director general of the Jean Nemo school library defends the benefits of this learning technique.


Jean Nemo is the general manager of the Librairie des écoles, which publishes textbooks, extracurricular notebooks and educational books.

The Scientific Council of National Education has just published a "warning note": despite the absolute priority given to the teaching of reading since 2019, an ongoing survey shows that an overwhelming majority of CP teachers use ineffective or even counterproductive methods.

When we created the Librairie des Écoles in 2007, the first textbook we published was a syllabic reading method.

It relied, on the one hand, on a tradition forgotten since the 1970s, the famous

ba ba,

and on the other hand, on recent research work which concluded that this traditional method was scientifically sound.

Coming back to this in 2007 was disruptive, because at that time syllabic methods were viewed with great suspicion.

They were considered conservative, even reactionary, suspicious…
