The Ukrainian capital is under fire again and temperatures continue to fall in winter.

Mayor Vitali Klitschko sees the will to fight.

Kyiv/Munich - Kiev's Mayor Vitali Klitschko has made it clear that he does not want to see any of the three million residents flee.

The Ukrainian capital fears a blackout after massive shelling in the Ukraine war.

"If we can no longer provide water or electricity, people will ask if they can move into the surrounding area," Klitschko said, according to a report published in the US magazine

Politico

on Monday (November 21) .

The blackout, i.e. the large-scale power failure, would be the worst scenario.

The military under Kremlin chief Vladimir Putin has been targeting the energy supply of the neighboring country for several weeks - and is already causing massive damage.

Ukraine, which now has to turn off its citizens' electricity by the hour to avoid bottlenecks, speaks of "energy terror".

The Russian military wants to suppress the Ukrainians and drive them to flee, Klitschko

told Politico

about the current situation in Ukraine.

"But do you know what's interesting about it?" he asked in the conversation.

"They do not succeed.

After the rocket fire, they are angry and ready to defend themselves.”

On Wednesday (November 23) there was apparently renewed shelling of Kyiv.

"This is the worst winter since the Second World War," Klitschko told

on the same day.

In the event of a blackout, parts of the city would have to be evacuated.

"But we don't want to let it get that far!"

The term "emergency supply" is now also common in Germany.

Klitschko is currently recommending it to the residents of Kiev with some justification: "You have to be prepared," he told

emphasizing drinking water and batteries for devices such as phones.

According to a telegram message from Klitschko in Kyiv, the terrestrial television briefly failed on Wednesday and there were stronger fluctuations in the already ailing power grid.

Air alerts went off across the country.

Vitali Klitschko: "We have to pay attention to the sky above us"

Schools and pre-schools are now the focus in Kyiv.

According to Klitschko, volunteers are converting thousands of these buildings around the city to accommodate people in emergencies.

They buy wood-fired stoves and electricity generators - if possible.

The choice fell on the schools mainly because some of them already have heating sources.

However, many other things are missing: generators, warm clothing, sleeping bags, mattresses, please Ukraine now needs from the West, said Klitschko.

And above all: more anti-aircraft systems to also ward off drones.
