The amount of sugars children are allowed to eat daily ranges between 4 and 6 teaspoons, or approximately 24 grams of sugar, according to pediatrician Dr. Howaida Nabulsi.
In a statement to SANA, Dr. Nabulsi explained that controlling the amount of sugar in children's food is one of the basics of preserving their health in terms of preventing obesity and diabetes, because sugars contain a high percentage of calories, and raise the rates of diabetes, in addition to their effect on the absorption of some vitamins. and mineral salts.
Dr. Nabulsi pointed out that avoiding too much sugar in children also contributes to protecting them from tooth decay, and enables them to obtain a varied diet, through other foods rich in protein, calcium and iron necessary for their growth.
Dr. Nabulsi advised the parents not to reward children with sweets, and to provide them in limited and studied quantities, and to mix them with protein, healthy fats, or fiber, which helps to reduce the harm to the child, and to replace sugars and soft drinks with food items that contain natural sugars and high nutritional value, such as dates and honey.
It is noteworthy that with the aim of raising awareness of the risks of diabetes and the pathological complications that accompany infection with it, and the need to follow a healthy lifestyle to prevent diabetes, the Ministry of Health launched on the 16th of this month an awareness campaign entitled “Do not sweeten it with excess”, which includes holding community events and educational lectures, and distributing leaflets. Guidance on the harmful effects of white sugar on public health.
