Oberau – A serious accident on the federal highway 2 between Eschenlohe and Oberau cost a human life in the morning: A 20-year-old from Garmisch-Partenkirchen succumbed to his serious injuries at the scene of the accident.
His car collided with a truck.
Due to the complicated salvage, the important traffic artery of the district had to be completely closed for several hours in the morning - which led to traffic jams and lengthy detours.
According to the Weilheim traffic police, the tragedy happened early in the morning at around 5.45 a.m. on the main road about 300 meters south of the ramp to Autobahn 95. The young man from the district town was heading north in his Mercedes A-Class, probably to work.
For reasons that have not yet been clarified, he collided sideways with an oncoming small truck driven by a 44-year-old from Fürstenfeldbruck.
The collision must have been violent.
Photos show the Mercedes literally ripped open on the driver's side.
As was learned from fire brigade circles, first responders freed the 20-year-old from the wreck and tried to revive him - but in vain.
The truck driver suffered minor injuries.
Cause still unclear
It is still unclear why this serious accident happened.
According to the police, the truck driver said the Mercedes driver had crossed into the oncoming lane.
A commissioned accident report should now provide answers to open questions.
The vehicles – in both cases there is probably a total loss – were seized for a technical inspection.
The Munich II public prosecutor's office was in charge of the investigation with the support of the traffic police.
The accident triggered a large-scale deployment of rescue workers.
In addition to the police, BRK and road maintenance department, the fire brigades from Oberau, Eschenlohe, Murnaun and Großweil were on site with umpteen helpers, several vehicles and heavy equipment.
Difficult recovery of the truck
Rescuing the 7.5 ton truck in particular proved to be difficult.
A crane had to be requested for this.
The accident vehicle with a box-like attachment had stopped directly on the crash barrier at the side of the road and threatened to tip over.
A dangerous situation, since the railway line runs right next to it.
An emergency manager from Deutsche Bahn therefore temporarily stopped train traffic between Murnau and Oberau.
To be on the safe side, the overhead line was also disconnected from the power supply to ensure risk-free work with the crane.
The section of road including the Oberau Tunnel had to be completely closed.
Road users were diverted over a wide area - either via the Ammertal or the Kesselberg.
As a result, traffic jams formed.
Federal highway 2 was released again around 12 noon.
