Freisinger cargo bike system: How to let the air out of the tires of the vandals

The Freisinger model project cargo bike has been well used so far.

Unfortunately also by vandals.

They're letting the air out of their tires now.

Freising

- It's actually been a success so far: the city's cargo bike rental system, which opened in August 2022 and is part of the model project "Cargo bike rental.

Relieving municipalities” is funded by the Free State of Bavaria.

But there were problems with vandalism (we reported).

Now they want to take countermeasures. The cargo bike rental system is intended to offer citizens a low-threshold offer as an alternative to their own cars.

Accordingly, an easy-to-use app should be developed, which will be used by the seven model municipalities - including Freising.

In addition, the attractiveness should be increased by the fact that the rental of cargo bikes is free for the first half hour.

Young people organize fun races

The balance after the first few months: The cargo bike rental system was mostly positively received, according to the city's planning committee.

The 16 cargo bikes were booked a total of 425 times in August and 435 times in September.

The most attractive locations are at the Steincenter, at the Am Wörth multi-storey car park and at Rindermarkt.

The easy operation of the bike, the fun factor and the good availability were particularly praised by the population.

Criticism came about the use of the LastenradBayernApp.

Above all, the city administration was reported more frequently that the cargo bikes had been borrowed by young people at the Steincenter, some of whom raced against each other with the cargo bikes.

The wheels were also damaged.

Abuse is now put a stop to.

Does it help?

The evaluation of the rental data confirmed a high level of use of the cargo bikes at the Steincenter for a period of just under 30 minutes, which is why no fee was due.

Based on past experience, they now want to put a stop to this abuse.

The following measures were proposed to the councillors:

1. ID check:

According to the experience of the Sigo company, which operates the city of Freising’s cargo bike rental system, checking the ID in the app is a deterrent to improper use and reduces the likelihood of theft and damage to the bikes.

The city of Frreising should therefore work to ensure that an ID check is integrated into the cargo bike Bavarian app.

2. Adjusting the usage fee

: The first half hour is currently free, which favors the use of "fun rides".

It was proposed to set the price at 1.50 euros for the entire first hour.

Each additional half hour started will continue to cost 1.50 euros as before.

3. Further measures:

If the two measures mentioned do not have any effect and vandalism continues to occur at the Steincenter station, consideration will be given to relocating the Steincenter station.

The planning committee approved the management's proposals.
