The police said that they have noticed that criminals have recently promoted illegal online gambling activities on the Internet and social media during the 2022 World Cup.
According to reports and in-depth investigations, personnel from the East Kowloon Regional Anti-Triad Action Group launched an anti-illegal campaign codenamed "CROWBEAK" and "WINDSHIELD" at about 5:00 pm yesterday (November 23). In a gambling operation, a unit in an industrial building at No. 43 Wang Lung Street, Tsuen Wan was raided, and a 37-year-old local man surnamed Ho was arrested on suspicion of "illegally accepting bets".
During the operation, officers seized about 28,000 yuan in cash, a mobile phone and a tablet computer.
After preliminary investigation, officers found suspected peripheral betting records on the arrested person's mobile phone and tablet computer, involving about 1.5 million yuan.
The arrested person is being detained for investigation.
The police emphasized that they will continue to strengthen law enforcement during the World Cup and appeal to the public not to participate in illegal gambling activities. Once convicted, the maximum penalty for the crime of "promoting or facilitating the taking of bets" and the crime of "taking bets" is a fine of HK$5 million and imprisonment 7 years.
