Germany's players put their hands over their mouths in the team photo ahead of their World Cup opener against Japan on Monday, an apparent protest at threats of sporting sanctions from Fifa to prevent the wearing of the 'One Love' armband in Qatar.

When appearing for the official pre-match photo, the entire Mannschaft starting XI made a strong gesture by placing their hands in front of their mouths, in protest at their inability to carry the “One Love” armband in Qatar.

The German federation (DFB) had denounced a “censorship”.

Before the entry into the running of its national team, the government had made it known that it was “

very unfortunate

” that the armband was subject to possible sanctions from FIFA.

It should be obvious, but it still isn't.

This is why this message is so important to us.

To deprive us of this armband is to deprive us of our voice.

We remain on our position

” declared the German federation.
