Destruction in the name of the Torah: do not try to damage the status quo Israel today

2022-11-24T22:50:13.219Z

Whoever tries to establish a halachic state outside of the ultra-orthodox and religious neighborhoods will declare war on the majority of the Israeli public, including many on the ideological right • This is not coercion and harm to freedom and democracy, but a step that will lead to a boomerang to the right

I have great respect for Rabbi Haim Druckman.

Apart from the personal sympathy, I remember very well his long-standing work for the settlement in the Yash, alongside his pragmatic approach on the issue of conversions and the breakthrough he led in this field in the IDF.

That is why I was especially sorry to read his statement to "Israel Today", according to which he does not understand what is wrong with making Israel a halachic state, except for what each person does inside their own home.

This is a shocking statement, with potentially fateful potential, which joins the worrying line led by the religious Zionist party.

Under the leadership of Bezalel Smotrich, the party is aligning itself with the extremists of the ultra-orthodox camp, which is evident in the joint demand raised this week for legislation that would enshrine the legality of gender segregation.

The alignment of the line is expressed in a series of additional statements from Smotrich and his entourage on matters of religion and state, and the most serious - the support for the ultra-Orthodox demands for the transfer of funds to citizens who do not serve or work.

This line contradicts the traditional approach of Rabbi Druckman and his ideological environment, as well as the approach of Rabbi Kook himself.

The one who preached statehood, civil service and a rapprochement of hearts between religious and secular people.

The same attitude that causes Rabbi Druckman even today to side with the authority of the rabbis of the cities to convert, contrary to the ultra-Orthodox view. It seems that in his statement regarding the state of Halacha in the public sphere, Rabbi Druckman was influenced by the spirit of coercion that blows from certain circles in ultra-orthodox society, without understanding the depth of the severity that is inherent in this.

Because whoever tries to introduce a halachic state in our country, outside of the ultra-orthodox and religious neighborhoods, will declare war on the majority of the Israeli public, including many on the right - secular, traditional and religious.

His statement joins the worrying line led by the religious Zionist party.

One can certainly understand the criticism of the dictatorship of thoughts and behavior in gender matters.

In particular, the attempt to impose imported progressive norms, which obscure sexual identity, the definition of a person and the essence of the family.

It is also possible to understand those who want to hold a private cultural event, between men or women only.

In this matter, the legal advice to the government crossed the line and led to coercion in the name of freedom.

But the meaning of the control of Halacha laws over our parshasia is the suppression of the lifestyle of the majority of the country's citizens, including many who are interested in values and a national Jewish identity but still do not observe mitzvot.

They want to go to the beach, to a restaurant or to the cinema on Shabbat, they strive to live their lives according to their own way, not according to Goldknopf-Smotrich values.

And by the way, part of preserving this way of life is the existence of public transportation on Shabbat outside religious and ultra-orthodox neighborhoods, for those who don't have the money or desire for a private car.

Those who push to stifle parochialism in the State of Israel on Shabbat, those who want to establish that it is permissible to seat women in the back of public transportation, to separate the visit to the health insurance fund between a woman and her husband, to distinguish separate sidewalks according to gender - leads to disaster.

Not only is it coercion, an infringement on freedom and democracy, but a step that will turn into a boomerang.

In one breath they are pushing to make the ultra-orthodox evasion the norm, while a small and growing public is forced to continue serving, risking and supporting the ever-growing ultra-Orthodox public.

At the same time, they want to forbid those who carry all the burden on their backs to live according to their own way.

This is a guaranteed recipe for an explosion.

And by the way, this is not the will of the majority.

The numerical result in the elections is 60:60, and in the winning camp, mainly in Likud and among the Otzma Yehudit voters, there are many secular and traditionalists who will not agree to be ruled by a Halacha state.

Will they promote a Halacha state?

No less important than that - Smotrich and his friends now have a huge task of historical importance: to focus on an area that will decide the debate that has poisoned us since 1967 about the future of "the territories".

To take advantage of Netanyahu's predicament and create an irreversible reality in Jerusalem, in the Negev and Galilee governments, in settlement in the Yosh. This should be the mission of the ideological right-wing elements in the government, which must not be mixed with moves that will cause justified public outrage. Anger that will eventually topple the government or dominate the left In the next round. Precisely now, and especially against the background of the real tasks, tolerance and patience are required in the field of religion and the state.

The New American Revolution

This week a secret dialogue was held between things said in Las Vegas and the coalition negotiations in Jerusalem. On the agenda - the consciousness revolution that is taking place at the top of the Republican Party in the USA, which was especially evident at the Jewish Republican conference held at the weekend.

One by one the leaders of the party, especially the bearers of hope for the future, came up and illustrated the new American revolution.

The Journal Chronicle reported a closed sentence from Florida Governor Ron DeSantis' speech regarding the US. But DeSantis said much more than that, and he was not alone. For example, former Vice President Mike Pence, a potential presidential candidate, who highlighted the achievements of the Trump-Pence administration For Israel, among other things in the fight against the Palestinian Authority and the PLO, in moving the embassy to Jerusalem, sovereignty in the Golan, sanctions on Iran and more.

But the most interesting thing is the spotlight that shone on the roots of the Republican revolution towards us: "We stand with Israel because we have similar goals and values. Her struggle is our struggle."

Following this, he anchored the partnership between the countries in the legacy of our father Abraham, and in the prophecy of the prophet Jeremiah for the return of the Jewish people to their homeland.

This line of support is also clearly visible in the words of Nikki Haley, the former ambassador to the United Nations and a presidential candidate in her own right. Haley was proud of being the first governor to legally ban BDS activities and to stand by Israel against the thugs of the United Nations.

Similar messages were heard, of course, from the mouth of Mike Pompeo, who as the US Secretary of State visited Yosh settlements and completely identified with the values of the Israeli right.

But the one who demonstrated the change of mind is the charismatic governor of Florida, DeSantis, who illustrated why we should keep our fingers crossed for him as the leading candidate in the next election.

He expressed his and the party's deep ideological connection to Israel when he said: "We (Florida) are the first state ever to hold a public event in Judea and Samaria (Judea and Samaria)."

And he explained why: "Because we understand history, and know that these ropes have a connection of thousands of years to the Jewish people. I don't care what the State Department says, these are not occupied territories."

The summary of the words of all the speakers, the Republican elite for the present and the future, illustrates a firm support for all of Israel's goals, and above all for the legitimacy of the Jewish occupation and settlement in Jerusalem and Judea and Samaria.

This is a dramatic revolution that stems from deep springs of worldview, morality and consciousness, long before interests.

Therefore, if a way is found for Donald Trump not to interfere, the next president of the United States will be a Republican - one of the conference speakers this week. And he is expected to revolutionize our relationship with the countries of the world. This is true for Iran, the Hague and the Human Rights Council, but it is critical In terms of ensuring our yeshiva in the cradle of the homeland.
