The European Environment Agency announced that 238,000 people in Europe died prematurely in 2020 as a result of pollution caused by fine particles in the air.
The agency said in a report carried by Agence France-Presse: Exposure to fine particles more concentrated than recommended by the World Health Organization led to the premature death of 238,000 people in European Union countries.
This number reflects a slight increase from what was recorded in 2019, when fine particles that penetrate deep into the lungs caused 231,000 premature deaths.
Air pollution is the biggest environmental threat to the health of Europeans, according to studies by health and environmental centers.
