The gas price brake is tax-free.
But according to traffic light plans, higher earners could be asked to pay for the relief.
Berlin – The gas price brake has been criticized a lot.
A particularly big point of contention: High earners are also massively relieved.
According to the plans of the traffic light government, a tax is now to be used to remedy the situation.
Gas price brake: Anyone who pays the solos must pay tax on the relief
According to a report in the
Handelsblatt
, high-income citizens should pay tax on the government relief payments from the gas price brake.
For private individuals who have to pay the “solidarity surcharge, the taxable income increases by the relief,” the newspaper reported, citing a formulation aid from the Federal Ministry of Finance for the coalition factions.
Accordingly, the traffic light wants to include this regulation in the annual tax law.
The regulation is intended to “ensure social balance,” the
Handelsblatt
reported .
Accordingly, the Ministry of Finance expects revenues of 850 million euros in the coming year.
Gas price brake: 90 percent of taxpayers do not have to pay solos
The solos have largely been abolished – last year they accounted for 90 percent of taxpayers.
The exemption limit, up to which no solidarity surcharge is due, is currently EUR 16,956 in tax liability.
According to the
Handelsblatt
, the coalition wants to raise the limit in two steps to 18,130 euros in 2024 because of the high inflation.
After that, there is a mitigation zone where the solos only have to be partially paid.
According to the Ministry of Finance, this should also apply to the gas price brake - in the mitigation zone only part of the income has to be taxed.
The gas price brake is already coming in January.
