Gas consumers are to be relieved by the gas price brake next year.

But how exactly does it work and how much money can consumers save with it?

An overview.

Berlin – With the gas price brake, consumers with gas heating should be relieved.

Because the prices for the raw material have risen enormously since the beginning of the Ukraine war - and that is now also reaching households.

Many therefore fear extremely high additional costs.

But what exactly is the gas price brake all about?

Merkur.de

clarifies the most important questions.

When will the gas price brake come into effect?

Officially, the gas price brake will actually only come in March.

But now it has been decided that there should also be retrospective relief for January and February.

This had been demanded from many sides - at the same time, however, the suppliers had emphasized that the changeover at the turn of the year would not be possible.

This is how this interim solution came about.

According to the draft law, the gas price brake will then apply until the end of April 2024.

Who will be relieved by the gas price brake?

The gas price brake is intended to relieve households and small companies with an annual consumption of less than 1.5 million kilowatt hours.

How does the gas price brake work?

Households and eligible companies should get 80 percent of their gas consumption from the previous year for twelve cents per kilowatt hour.

District heating customers should also be relieved.

A capped gross price of 9.5 cents applies to them.

The contractually agreed prices are due for consumption that is not capped – so the incentive to save is not lost.

The price brake automatically reduces the monthly deduction for prices above the cap.

The state pays the difference.

According to calculations by comparison portals, the average gas price is currently almost 18 cents.

The annual statement for 2023 will show how high the consumption actually was.

How much do consumers actually save as a result of the gas price brake?

The following table with data from the comparison portal Check24 shows how different sample households with different levels of gas consumption are relieved by the gas price brake.

The figures refer to the annual consumption and thus also to the annual relief.

How is the relief from the gas price brake passed on to tenants?

That is currently being clarified.

The draft law is still in the departmental vote.

It is not yet clear to what extent landlords will have to adjust the monthly down payment immediately and which information obligations will apply.

In principle, however, they are obliged to pass on the relief.

Will industrial customers also be relieved by the gas price brake?

Yes, even large consumers, for example from industry, will be relieved.

A guaranteed price of 7 cents per kilowatt hour applies to them, but net and only for 70 percent of the consumption volume in 2021. According to the information, the “industrial gas price brake” will apply to around 25,000 companies and 1,900 hospitals nationwide.

The price brake should also apply to the material use of the gas, for example in the chemical industry.

The regulation does not apply to gas-fired power plants.

Does the gas price brake also apply to liquid gas customers?

no

The planned gas price brake only applies to natural gas, not to liquid gas that is brought to customers in tankers.

How much does the gas price brake cost the state?

According to the draft law, 546 billion euros will be incurred in 2023 and 2024 just for the implementation of the price brake for natural gas and heat.

The costs are to be borne by the Economic Stabilization Fund.
