A piece of fabric as part of contemporary history: the "One Love" armband worn by Interior Minister Nancy Faeser in the stands of the Khalifa International Stadium during the World Cup match against Japan is to be on display in the House of History in future.
According to SPIEGEL information, the SPD politician will leave the bandage to the House of History Foundation.
According to the Ministry of the Interior, the foundation asked for this.
It had been announced that efforts were being made to create objects that “visualize the diverse discussions surrounding the 2022 World Cup in Qatar and the commitment to diversity and tolerance at national and international level”.
The captains of seven teams participating in the World Cup, including Germany, actually wanted to wear the “One Love” armband as a symbol of diversity and tolerance.
However, they refrained from doing so for a short time after the world football association Fifa had threatened penalties for players.
This was often seen as a cave-in to Fifa's threats.
As a sign of criticism of the restrictive policy of the world football association, the German national players covered their mouths for the team photo before the game against Japan.
Faeser sat next to Infantino
Faeser wore the armband in the stadium right next to Fifa President Gianni Infantino.
According to the Ministry of the Interior, she had not announced this.
Before the game, Faeser clearly informed Infantino of his criticism of Fifa's decision.
Faeser took off the jacket under which she wore the bandage shortly before kick-off.
In the second half she wore the armband over her jacket.
Faeser said Thursday in Berlin that Infantino asked her if it was about the bandage.
She replied: "And it's not as bad as you think, is it?" She also told the FIFA boss that she saw the world association's decision as a big mistake.
It is unbelievable what kind of pressure was put on the football associations of the seven European countries so that this symbol of diversity is not worn on the pitch.
