Advent atmosphere is finally back in Starnberg: On Thursday evening, after a two-year break due to the pandemic, the third mayor, Christiane Falk, opened the well-attended Christmas market on the church square, which lasts for eleven days this year - to the delight of many citizens and stand operators.

Starnberg – It couldn’t have gone better: Exactly at the opening of the Starnberg Christmas market at 6 p.m. on Thursday evening, the hours of rain that had lasted for hours stopped and an Advent atmosphere was created on the church square between wooden booths, brightly colored lights and the several meter high Christmas tree in the middle , which attracted numerous visitors to the city.

"The Christmas season has begun, we're looking forward to the contemplative weeks," third mayor Christiane Falk opened the market after around 150 kindergarten children had walked with lanterns from the station roundabout through the city center to the church square.

The special feature: the Christmas market will be extended from four to eleven days this year - a concern of the City Initiative.

"That was very important to us and especially to the citizens," says Chairwoman Corinna Hjorth, owner of the business Zauberhaft deluxe, which is also represented with a stand at the market.

“At Christmas time, many customers went shopping to places where there was more of an Advent atmosphere.

We want to prevent that with the longer duration - and we are not yet at the end.

Our aim is for the Christmas market to take place throughout Advent,” says Hjorth.

35 booths from leather manufacture to clubs to gastronomic delicacies

A total of 35 market stalls are currently distributed on the church square - from a leather factory to clubs and gastronomic delicacies.

A cup of mulled wine costs around four euros, as does a bratwurst in a bread roll and a cinnamon-sugar crêpes.

The majority of the stall operators come from the district, such as Luise Zachmann.

She runs a tailoring and sailmaking workshop in Percha and has been selling her homemade bags, purses and pencil cases made from recycled material at the Christmas market for several years.

"It's great that so many people came on the first evening." Bettina and Sarah Loidl's fur stand has been around at the Starnberg market for a similarly long time - even though the mother-daughter team comes from Mainburg in Lower Bavaria.

"It's just great here.

When I get up in the morning and can drink my coffee by the lake, that's really unique," says Sarah Loidl.

Sven Thunig from the ice workshop had to get back into the Christmas market business after the two-year break.

"It's all still a bit unusual, but you can tell that people are interested," says Thunig.

Large supporting program during the Starnberg Christmas market

In addition to the market stalls, the city and City Initiative have also come up with a supporting program with a Christmas workshop, a tourist train, a children's theater and many different concerts.

The Christmas market in Starnberg is on Friday, November 25, from 12 p.m. to 10 p.m., on the weekend, November 26 and 27, from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m., from Monday, November 28 to Thursday, December 1, from 12 to 10 p.m to 9 p.m., on Friday 2 December from 12 p.m. to 10 p.m., on Saturday 3 December from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. and on Sunday 4 December from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.
